Estimating fuel cost

I'm trying to estimate the cost of fuelling my i3; I've only had it a week so not much to go on yet.

10,000 miles p.a. @~4.0 miles/kWh = 2,500 kWh

EDF GoElectric 35 @ 4.5p kWh (0.00-05.00)


Total: £112.50 p.a.

Is that right? I can't believe it's so low.

i do 850 miles a month and my wallpod app shows me i spend £11.30 a month charging the car which is 0.013p a mile

and i dont hypermile, rather booting the st out of it so with your lower tarrif and much better economy than a M3P you should be well under 1p a mile

No, £112.50.

Before covid I was doing 24k miles/year
Ca., 7,200kWh / year @ 5p/kWh (Octopus Go) = £360.00

Before I bought the EV I was spending £24/day on petrol x 240 days/year = approx., ££5,760.00.

Savings in fuel pay for the car.

£360 for 24k miles = 1.5p/mile.

If you can charge at home on a cheap tariff they're remarkably cheap

Public charging can start to get more expensive (potentially 10x more expensive) and if they ever look to add the same amount of duty it will start to get close to the cost of petrol, but until they do, enjoy the cheapness.

This might make me sound as thick as mince, but I genuinely had no idea that EVs were that cheap to run, that's insane!

Will the i3 do timed charging ( or your wall unit ) ?
My Jag and wall unit do neither ... so I'm stuck on 14p

Yep. It's worked well up until I ran low, and I think it overrode my settings as it decided it didn't have enough time to achieve 80% charge in the time allowed; that's my theory anyway.
I'm waiting for Zappi to be installed so using granny charger. It's programmed to charge 01:30 - 08.20 as that's the cheaper slot on my E7 tariff, though scheduled for departure 07.15. It was at 33% when I plugged it in at 19.19 and began charging immediately - 95% charged at 07.23 when I unplugged it. Last night I plugged it in 18.16 @ 76% but it didn't begin charging until the proper time 01.30. Charging completed when I unplugged 07.21 this morning.

I set my i3 on the BMW Connect App to begin charging at 12:30am for the Octopus Go low rate.
I have a fairly basic 7kW charger and use approx 30kW per day commute (when not WFH) so it takes a little over 4 hours.

I have occasionally set it for timed charging but then plugged in and it's started charging straight away.
I puzzled over this for a week or two but then found that it simply needs a little time to reset the charge set up after making the phone a[pp setting changes.
When you plug in, the dash awakes and shows the charging status. With timed charging, their is a small clock showing on the screen.

i was paying £300 a month for v power for my AMG, £300ish a year road tax, £400 service, £1300 for front pads+ rotors every 2 years so about £410 a month

That all costs me £11 a month now lol

I upgraded my PC with the savings incl an RTX 3090, this years savings will go on a 77" 120mhz LG evo OLED

Remember to include any increase in the peak rate & standing charge compared to the plan that would be best without EV charging. For example if you got one with a 20p per day standing charge then your GoElectric would be £50 a year more expensive in standing charges.

So all in reality the cost would be closer to £200. That said there's a point at which it's so much cheaper it's just not worth working out.

I have averaged 3.7 in my new 120 Ah i3 over the last 2000 miles and 3 months.
Still v cheap though.

I'm on a fixed tariff and it's still bloody cheap. I had to drop my son off somewhere on Saturday and I spanked it back at 8am on empty A and B roads.

In my old tuned RS7 it would have been £18-20

In the Model S P90DL is was around £2.80

+on roads like that the Tesla is faster in every way and other than noise much more fun to drive IMHO.

Seems about right for spring especially with the poor weather we've had. We averaged 4 across 12 months and 15k in ours.
