Is there an EV Unicorn around the corner?
Discussion
We're just approaching 3 and 1/2 years in a 22kW battery leased Renault Zoe EV and are beginning to think about making a change.
Obviously things have moved on significantly in the last 3 years, and CV-19 has impacted on both our commuting and holiday patterns.
WFH looks to be an option long term for me, so no more season ticket on the train, however I do need to visit the office once or twice a week. The other half can walk / cycle to work when not WFH.
So other than the weekly shop, a new EV is a bit of a luxury item for us, rather than a necessity, predominantly used to take us to our hobbies in the countryside or on holidays.
We're not up against the clock so can make the change at any point really, and the pace of new EV cars coming out is amazing compared to the last time we went car shopping.
Ideally want circa 200 mile range, 4 seats, and budget circa £30k. Have tested a Hyundai Kona, Pug 208 and 2008 (assuming the Vauxhall and Citroen versions are largely the same) and an MG ZS. Looking forward to the launch of the Skoda Enyaq but that is pushing the envelope.
Although the charging infrastructure situation has moved on significantly in the last 3 years and new cars keep being launched with ever more power / range, they also seem to increasing in cost quite significantly.
So, is there an ideal car just around the corner, at the right price, or are we better fishing in the pond now?

Out of interest, if you’re not going to be putting many miles on it, why go new? Could you not get much more for your money second hand (or same car at a lower price) and with your mileage even a slightly higher mileage 2-3 year old car would come down to average in a couple of years.
MG5? supposed to be an update- not sure if just a facelift or more) this year - although the current model is new to the uk, its been around in china for quite a while.
200 mile range, normal type estate car around £20k.
The new hyundai ev6? is expected to be good but no idea on cost.
the seat/cupra born looks good (their take on the id3)

The MG5 and VW ID3 both seem to meet the requirements at the moment, as does the 62kwh Leaf. Tesla are meant to be releasing a small car at some point, but probably not particularly soon.

I think the market has hardly progressed at all in the last 3 years if you want a normal family hatchback EV. So much talk, so little actual product.
Plenty of super expensive stuff. Plenty of SUVs. Little else.
Choices-
Leaf (getting pretty old, had one)
Ioniq (currently own. It’s great. Getting on a bit)
Id3 (pricey, pretty cheap interior, seemed ok but didn’t wow)
Tesla 3 (pricey, not a hatchback, but including it here).
That’s pretty much it.

VW ID.3 58kWh Pro Performance. £27k.

Renault Zoe, apparently on the right tyres and at 30km/h it does over 450 miles Plenty of super expensive stuff. Plenty of SUVs. Little else.

What about a used Tesla
Cheapest appear to be £25k for 312miles and 0-62mph in 5 seconds. 362bhp.
That’s if you even need to spend that much.
That would be the LR rwd which wasn't sold in the UKCheapest appear to be £25k for 312miles and 0-62mph in 5 seconds. 362bhp.

Also be curious where you're finding one that cheap

They're not D's, they are RWD cars I think. Also even the world hypermiling champ won't get 312 miles out of one, realistically 200 if you're driving carefully and factoring in a bit of battery degradation. Still I think they are great value if you're doing a lot of miles.annodomini2 said:

Your going to drop 30k on a car you dont even really need?
Why wouldnt a 5k Nissan leaf do the same job?
A £5k Nissan leaf, especially a Nissan leaf, will need a new battery. Why wouldnt a 5k Nissan leaf do the same job?
