Some lower performance EVs are welcome especially for those with less driving experience or who want improved efficiency and decreased insurance costs especially for a car which may be used predominantly for family duties.

My wife is learning to drive now and whilst there would be some advantages to putting her in an EV from day 1, the last thing she needs is something in insurance group 50 that does 60 in 3 seconds.
I see the reduced performance to respect accident prone or inexperienced or limited skill drivers.

Tesla has "chill mode", also has valet mode which can limit speed/acceleration.

Tesla also has acceleration limiter and emergency braking to stop it running into the back of the car in front.

At the moment, Tesla are the most efficient, closely followed by Hyundai.

EVs don't suffer as much as ICE cars from adding performance (only weight of the battery (if larger) and extra motor (if applicable))

There's no pumping losses etc from increased displacement.

So driven sedately there are mostly as efficient as their lesser counterparts.

I am not a fan of the look of the Tesla 3 - but in practial terms it if the best suited.
The supercharger network is a big bonus as well.
Head says Tesla, but heart says XC40 recharge or Polestar 2.
Guess it's all down to cost. If the Tesla is considerably cheaper, then I may have to make do with the guppy looks. I'll be sitting on the inside ....

The Q4 is 4th in a list of 4.....
polestar over the model 3. I just can't get on with the interior of the tesla for the cost.

Accident risk is obviously a thing especially for somebody not so well experienced in driving let alone accustomed to a powerful car with immediate response. We all saw that Taycan video which went viral! For the same reason I don't expect to see driving instructors driving around with beginners in a model 3 performance any time soon, teaching them the nuances of measured throttle control.

It does make you wonder what might happen as these become more widespread. We've all heard of half senile pensioners 'pressing the wrong pedal' in Sainsburys car park and doing some damage. I once had a neighbour, a young mum who passed her test and had a small Polo automatic, which managed to get driven in reverse through my garage resulting in the whole block being demolished. I was on the scene having been in said garage 60 seconds previously and she was armament the car was at fault, etc etc. I didn't mention the fact she had nearly killed me as she seemed angry and shaken. I dread to think what might happen if that were to occur in a 2.5T 500bhp EV.

Hyundai Ionic 5 or Kia EV6 could be contenders if I hold off a little for their release and they sit around similar price levels.
…. Can’t believe such brands are making my list as historically a German brand user.

Points noted on insurance but if I go EV it will be via company car scheme as I’ve no desire to take residual risk with new technology.

Yes took one out with my wife last Monday. It’s a great car and I think we will buy one, we had previously test driven an ID4. Q4 had a much more conventional interior and better handling (although there are various suspension and steering upgrades available on the ID4 which would have brought it closer). We drove the 40 which had good performance in town but my wife felt it was slower 20-60 on a motorway slip road than her 2010 Discovery so we will probably go for the 50 Quattro to be sure. She liked the augmented reality and it was a very comfortable car. Ride was a little hard for her so we will probably tick the adaptive suspension box although I found it fine (GT car driver).

Main reason we like it is our son is already 6’4 yet there is enough headroom in the back, most electric cars have a sloping roof to improve aero and he doesn’t fit. Also range is just enough to get to our place in Devon without charging even in real conditions. (168 miles on the A303 or 198 on motorway). Downside is a lot less luggage space than the Disco so we will need to cut back on inflatable paddle boards etc and might have to invest in a roof box(hopefully that won’t impact range too much). ID4 was also a good car and about £10k less but has an orange brown dashboard on the higher models and no leather (we have a scruffy terrier that likes to spread mud over the back seat !). Also try higher power four wheel drive version isn’t available to order yet.

Interesting, thanks. How was the cabin noise/refinement compared to the Disco?

Very good. It’s a very quiet environment in most electric cars I have been in. The Audi interior seemed very squeak free and generally high quality. Ride was good but my wife thought it a little hard (we drove an s-line so sports suspension) so we will go for the adaptive set up. Overall impressive car - my wife just had to get her head around losing all the luggage space from the Disco and the 7 seats. At the weekend we offered to bring a few of my daughter’s crew mates back from Henley women’s Regatta so we had 6 of us plus 4 kit bags in the car which won’t be possible with the Q4. If there was an all electric Disco or Defender we would be buyers but not one currently on the horizon unfortunately.

I've just seen Volvo are releasing a lower end XC40 recharge, anyone any thoughts on how they stack up?

I. Much preferred the Xc40 to the q4etron.
I drove the 40 and didn't feel that it offered anything exciting.
Drove the xc40 the next day and it felt and drove considerably better. At 60k, it should do! I'd be interested in a lower end version to see if it has the same feel.

Polestar 2 still leading the pack for me.
