It was a friend of mine who's looking really, and we both commented that it was very much a head decision over a heart. It has better range, nice functionality etc etc and is half the price. But if a car's more than just an "appliance" for the purchaser then these things are only part of the story (otherwise nobody would buy anything other than the bottom of the line cars smile).

The thing about surface materials is not so much that you touch them all the time...but your eye picks up on them, and a natural thing to do in a new car is to feel everything (it is for me anyway. I appreciate I'm weird smile). I don't touch the headliner on my 997 very often, but I did when I bought it, I do now and then and I can tell it's not that rough polyester fabric that catches on your skin.

Ditto door cappings etc.

It's a real shame as I genuinely don't think it wouldn't cost that much to address....I get the impression that in pushing the tech, Kia resorted to "Kia" know how on the interiors, using the same textured plastics etc as they do elsewhere. So maybe that would have been the cost....not so much the materials but the know how.

Whether it's a UK peculiarity or not I don't know...but I do think it will hamper them selling 60k cars in the long run.

I did like the EV6 though.

EV6 and Ionic 5 are technically similar enough that to allow you to choose the one that you think looks the best without making a “wrong” decision.

I think the Ionic 5 has very interesting detailing but slightly dumpy proportions that provide a more practical overall package.

I prefer the more coupe/fastback proportions of the EV6 and could easily live with the compromise that brings in interior space.

When there is no engine to give a car it’s character how it looks has increased importance to how I perceive a car and how it makes me feel.

An i4 makes me feel depressed.

Unless you spend a lot of time in it as a passenger, would you notice the surface materials a few months down the line?

I tend to notice a car's interior the first few times, and after that you tend not to unless cleaning it- as you get in and start up and then look through the front window for the journey.

I do however always notice the exterior as you are walking to and from it all the time.

I agree.
I looked at the i4, the Q4, iPace, VW, Skoda etc., and wasn't blown away by the looks of any.
It was the looks of the Ioniq 5 that caught my attention and had me taking a deeper look.
In comparing against the EV6, I prefered the I5 for the more flexible interior.
I bought an Ioniq 5 Ultimate and have been very happy with interior materials and the sliding rear seats etc. and the benefits these provide.

Alternatively, from my perspective the Ioniq 5 looks like a design that will age horribly, has an interior like an Apple store and is supposed to be rather soft to drive. Doesn't appeal to me at all.

Fortunately we are now at a point where there is some actual choice in the marketplace. Go back to 2019 when we got our Model 3 and there was bugger all.

Good review, but won't make my EV6 arrive any sooner frown

Does anyone know how real the lead times are? I was quoted ~5 months when I ordered in December

All say: don't get the GTX, it's more expensive but no more fun to drive.

Well, it's almost as tall as the Jaguar I-Pace, but definitely lower than something like a Q5 if that's your question.

I think it's big but looks impressive in the flesh.

Compact crossover SUV. It’s basically halfway between a hatchback and a small SUV.

EV6 is 4,680mm long and 1,880mm wide

Audi Q5 is 4,663mm long and 1,893mm wide

I’m my mind an Audi Q5 is a medium crossover, not a small crossover

Wow, I didn’t think it would be so tall, I’ve not seen one in the flesh yet.

My I5 is about Q3 size but Q5 inside. It’s a nice height to get in and dead easy to drive. I’m happy with it now except the trim in front of the central screen I cannot bear to touch it.

What's an I5? Is it the Ioniq? Because that's most definitely as large as a Q5 in exterior dimension as well, even though it hides it better.

However, the EV6 is some 100mm lower (and is pretty much same height as an I-pace), which doesn't sound much, but in real world, it's noticeably lower. This does make it look smaller.

The Q5 is a compact luxury SUV. Compact crossover SUV is the EV6 recognised vehicle class as far as I have found.

Ioniq 5 is a little higher and shorter length but is also in the same vehicle class.

EV6 4680x1880x1550
Ioniq 5 4635x1890x1605
Model Y 4775x1850x1600
Model 3 4694x1849x1443
I4 4785x1852x1448
Q4 etron 4588x1865x1632

Q5 4665x1893x1659
