So if Electricity prices are going to rise 30/40% year on year what is that going to do for the push to covert to electric cars? Try going to a switching site and see the dramatic rise in electricity with many small players going bust. We will soon be left with the old cartel

Well, if it’s still cheaper than running an IC powered car, then the push is still there.

It sucks but I don't think it's alarming.

Two things in life are certain, you get taxed and you die.

I have enjoyed running my EV for small change, however I have always been acutely aware than once uptake increases/fuel tax revenue decreases, we would be in for electricity price hikes.

My hope is renewables become more fruitful with the adoption of tidal recovery systems and more wind; but this still seems years away.

Won't this be more worrying for refining petrol/diesel?

EVs might go up from costing £2 a week to £4 a week, no big deal.

Lets be realistic, not that many have bills that small. Also given the purchase costs etc.

Electricity is a small proportion of total cost of running an EV. Depreciation and Tyres both cost much more?

Hopefully there will still be off peak deals. I might try and be better at timing charges. But supsect it won’t materially alter the cost of my ownership.

How many tyres are you going through?

£500 is going to get you a good set of tyres for a normal EV lasting 20k miles. That's 0.025p per mile.

Not much more, if you were spending £10 @ 5p/kwh (typical EV rate - less if you're trying) you'd be doing about 5-600 miles a week in an EV.

I was doing about 150-200miles a week in the zoe, cost was meaningless.

But the point is it's still a tiny sum.

It is far more likely to make petrol prices fly up, they use loads of leccy.

Where are you getting 5p / kWh from? I export at 6.2p and think I'm getting a st deal.

You are. Far better off storing your home grown energy than selling it back to the grid for peanuts.

I do. 9 Powerwalls. Still exporting too much in summer though.

3PD more like a grand all in?

Point is, electricity isn’t a significant enough percentage of TCO costs to move the needle on adoption. As others have said petrol unlikely to get cheaper.

Every night from 0030-0430

https://octopus.energy/go/

And free at work during the day.

The alternative is ~25-30p a mile in fuel alone.

better off storing energy than getting paid peanuts for it?

How much does it cost to store electricity and how much electricity does the storage solution buy?

Doesn't make financial sense to store electricity yet.

It amuses me that it’s taken a sustained period of not very windy weather for people and the government to realise that output from wind turbines is reduced when there’s no wind.

I tried for months with Octopus to get a tariff at the start of the year. They didnt want to know. I simply don't know how they can offer 5p even if it is for hardly any time of day when I can export genuinely renewable daytime energy at 6.2p. What possible renewable energy can they be selling on a windless night? Something smells very fishy.

Where do you work that has free power? Someone has to pay for it?

Yes, Octopus, they are a decent company. Sent me an email saying their prices won't go up just yet.

I wonder if electricity used for refining fuel is subsidised?

5 kWh/US gallon is needed (according to google).

So fuel could go up 5p a litre or so?

The later in the year that this happens the lower the output from PV arrays too. The only reliable 'renewable' is tidal as it is not dependent on the weather to drive it.
