I test drove an iD3 yesterday. Before going I'd already decided that I didn't like it, based on reviews and the interior photos, however, I actually quite liked it. It does have it's issues (namely the Cupra Born), cheap plastics and unresponsive touch controls, but overall it surprised me. It felt nicer to drive that the E208, ok neither are exactly premium cars, but they're both around the £30k mark.

I have read a rumour though, that VW have learned lessons, and the facelift (not due until 2023) is set to have better interior materials, physical steering wheel buttons, and knobs instead of touch bars on the infotainment panel. I've also read that as the Cupra Born will have a 12" display that the iD3 made from early next year onwards will also have the 12" display.

Personally, although I liked the iD3, I think I'd need to wait for the Cupra Born

Having had my id3 from on.to turn up today the only thing that really irks me is the lack of scheduled charging. So as I have a 4 year old Rolec charger at home that isn’t smart, I can’t take advantage of off-peak charging.

How the heck does that feature not exist for VW yet?

It is available… via the WeConnect app

Thanks for that, that is encouraging, but it’s a long wait.

It will certainly be interesting to see what changes are actually made. I have a Max Pro Performance on order, which is due April next year, so will definitely benefit from any improvements. Having said that, I wasn't particularly offended by the cabin materials. Everything you actually touch is fine, the wheel is nice, I really didn't have a significant problem with anything. I cringe every time I see a reviewer reach down into the footwell and criticise the use of hard plastics.

I understand what you mean. I guess I had a visceral dislike of the silly styling of the first one I actually saw in the flesh.
I am glad that thy might go back to proper controls, but I still find the styling hard to like. It just reminds me of the early people carriers. The body shape of the Born is more or less identical, but the way it’s dressed up is a little more interesting. I suppose though that they will cost somewhat more.

I don’t usually buy brand new cars, so I suppose I will have to wait quite a while before I get aboard the e train. I don’t have a business to run it off, and sadly I don’t get a car allowance, so none of the advantages really accrue to me.

There's nothing in the link above to suggest knobs and buttons are coming back. Just that the temperature slider will light up at night. Big woo.

I'm firmly in the "couldn't care less" camp with that one. Once you use the Smart Climate voice commands ("I've got cold feet" etc.), then you'll never use the temperature slider again.

See, the link above mentions a 12" screen from November onwards, neither the website, brochure or dealerships have any mention of this. They're also still advertising the 'style' trim, which is no longer available. My brother has been keeping an eye on EVs for a while, and I'm sure he said VW have altered the trim line-up 3 times since launch.

Sat in an ID3 with my missus at the weekend, she instantly liked it what with the interior space, even the screens, I must say the interior looked ok to me, interesting that there is a face lift coming soonish (18 months?), my only concern is about the user interface and software issues.

To be fair, the November MY updates are normally late in the month, and dealers (surprise, surprise) generally know nothing about them.

You're right about the trim levels, there have been quite a few available, originally Life > Business > Family > Style > Tech > Max > Tour. They've simplified it recently with just the Life, Family, Max and Tour available. The Style is still in the brochure, but to my knowledge you can't actually order one.

That's a bit rubbish. Why can't the car's own software inside it do that?

It can, RTFM

The new software, version 3.0 is out tomorrow. The latest (v2.3) was supposed to fix many/all of the bugs, but it will be interesting to see how they have changed things with v3.0.

Finally found it. It’s hardly intuitive is it?

You have to create a “charging location” on the car and then you can set timers. Going to give it a go this evening. So basically if you want timed charging anywhere you always have to make a location. Rather than set it as default behaviour by the car over the schedule.

VW really need a lesson in UX design imho.

Oh and I keep bloody pressing the volume buttons on the right hand side of the steering wheel with the palm of my hand.

Also does anyone know how to set the small display as default to just have the two panels? I don’t use the built in sat nav, so every time I turn on the car a third of the display is just dead space until I set it. Every time. Why not allow a default? It’s a software function afterall. Turn it to 3 panel/widget mode when the sat nav is available. Rather than leaving dead space on the screen.

Also on the little display (the one behind the steering wheel) why not along the bottom row show odo info, battery percentage and outside temp? There’s definitely a row there as I had a “it’s frosty outside” icon this morning.

Also turning off eco drive mode allows far more regen it seems? It’s not quite one pedal driving, but it’s a bit better.

I was a bit unsure about the ID.3, after watching reviews about the interior quality, buttons/UI and the software, but thought we should really go and have a look for ourselves, 4 year old and 10 month old in tow with pram and two car seats! We actually really liked it, coming from a Leaf 40 it felt much more modern, cabin really spacious and airy, boot slightly smaller than the Leaf but still plenty big enough.
To drive it reminded me of the i3 we used to have, rear wheel drive and also the gear selector which we like. Been looking around at others such as the eC4, which didn't really do it for us, but finally decided we'd just have to stomach the wait and get an interim car when the Leaf goes back in Jan.

Just signed a lease for a Family Pro Performance in Makena Turquoise yesterday, £350 a month on a 1+47, 10k pa. The broker is saying April but looking on FB groups at delays I'm thinking more like May/June at the earliest!

If you're worried about the lead time don't get involved on the ID3 Forums, there is some serious doom mongering going on there!

I placed my order via DTD a few weeks ago (Max Pro Performance in Manganese Grey with Andoya alloys and bike carrier prep), and have been quoted 26 weeks, which would be mid-April I think, however there seems to be a general consensus that orders are taking much longer than that.
