My i4 M50 goes into production next week.

To throw the cat amongst the pigeons, the dealer has let me borrow their iX 40 this week and I have a few decent journeys planned.

Haven't moved it beyond the car park yet but I really like the styling and it is a gorgeous cabin - appreciate the range would be not much better than my old e-Tron (which was never an issue) and its not a quick car.

Nice one, when did you order?

I ordered in Dec and my initial delivery date of July has been pushed back twice till Sept.

Spending the long wait watching pretty much every i4 video on YouTube!

Ordered the i4 M50 back in October. I guess a build week of next week will see it land at the dealership in early May.

My collection may depend on whether or not i like the iX !!

With a 71kW battery I'd expect it to be worse than your etron TBH. At 2400KG and with 21" wheels it's not going to be a 3 mile/kWh car in reality I'd guess?

Hi Swoll,

Think you are bang on. Whilst a lovely place to sit, it is hungry for volts. The sat-nav with augmented reality is tres cool.

Will see what it is like on a longer run but suspect the i4 M50 remains the better bet for me and closer in size style to my M3 Comp which it will be replacing.

So did a 260 mile trip in the loaner iX 40.

Virtually all dual carriageway at a constant 65-70 mph. Outside temp was about 14C. Range is 180 miles - nowhere near the claimed 251.

The iX is very comfortable, incredibly quiet and generally a very nice place to sit but the 40 is flawed by the range given that even with a modest spec this costs around £80k.

That's quite a chunk. even in December in the eniro (claimed 282) driving it flat out with all the heating on, 95% dual carriageway couldn't get it below 200 miles on a full charge.

in normal weather, 95% dual carriageway we get 246 - zero regen opportunities apart from the odd car pulling out in front of you biggrin

Could well suit quite a number of prospective owners but is it realy good enough for a 2022 launch EV with a £70k+ starting price?

Not a lot you they do about the efficiency, that's just physics, but as above fitting a 70kW battery to a car of this size and weight was never going to offer the kind of real world range people expect.

Seen a few IXs on the road and they are bloody horrendous in the flesh. The range on the 40 will be crap as well given the weight, size and the battery size. I would get the IX3 personally which is far more efficient and better looking.

I4 looks a good product however and a couple of colleagues have ordered them, its the only car I would consider swapping by Polestar for at a similar price point but I have it for another 2 years yet.

Update on the thread:

So i had 24hrs in the i4 40. i've now just finished 72hrs with the Polestar 2 Dual motor.

I've run some tests on the configurators - options wise, like for like the BMW is £6000 more expensive, that's before you even get into the power/performance and 2wd vs 4wd advantages of the polestar.

imo the only metric the BMW i4 40 wins on is looks, everything else you'd be crazy to choose the Germans over the Swedish (and Chinese lol)

I put an order down on sunday for a Polestar 2 Dual Motor in black (space) with the 20" alloys, pilot lite and plus packs. all in, a smidge over £55k

i think the eDrive40 needs to be about £8-10k cheaper than it is to 'sit' right with the competition. The m50 is priced right, i think - and just too rich for me.

What I am reading is that there is..... drum roll please..... competition!

Yeah, we have competition! Someone test drove a couple of EVs and worked out what they wanted and .... again drum roll.... went for the one that best fitted their requirements!

Ok, so I am being a bit of a tit, but the point is valid - this isnt a one horse race and as more OEM's come to market with EV's the choice that we all have is only going to get better. And ultimately that should mean that we can hope to see better value in time too. But I take this as a very positive thing though, buy what fits and be happy with your purchase.

And I do like the Polestar too - nice looking car and always had a soft spot for Swedish interiors. Just dont tell my wife, she hates them....
