Volvo XC40 / C40
Discussion
Test drove a twin motor XC40 yesterday. Impressions, very quick, not just off the line but mid range 30 - 70 felt very rapid, no hesitation just instant acceleration.
I've read a few reviews regarding the chassis but it didn't feel lacking to me, precise in turn in and under heavy acceleration didn't feel stressed or unsettled.
Steering did feel light but can be altered in settings to firm.
One pedal mode did take a bit of getting used to but didn't feel overly aggressive.
Cabin I would describe as functional.
There is a considerable build time on them, I was told 9 to 12 months but that time scale suits me.
The car seems quite colour sensitive, the one I tested was blue, they also had a xc40 in metallic black.
Overall I was very impressed and need to have a good think before potentially placing an order.
Hope this is helpful.

Early impressions of our (Leased) C40 Twin Pro would echo most of the above; rapid, refined, comfortable (front seats are excellent), rides well even on the 20's, fit & finish feels generally high quality, if perhaps a bit 'plasticky' for a circa £60k car, with some cheap interior detailing- 'functional' is a fair description. Google control system seems to work very well & is intuitive.
I agree with the XC40/C40 being colour sensitive -ours is black, which means no roof-colour contrast- (which you otherwise have) & I think it works well & looks great in the metal. Has some excellent exterior design details.
It's far less of a practicality compromise compared to the XC40 than expected, losing little in real-terms boot-space & is still a decent dog car, even given the sloping roof & rear-headroom isn't the issue I feared it might be, though the rear seat squabs are a bit shallow.
On the road, it hides its heft well for most of the time, feeling taut & composed in daily driving & its only if you 'chuck' it into a corner, you're reminded of the 2+ tonnes, a driving style which doesn't suit the car's personality anyway.
Still finding out about the realistic range, but can't have been too leaden footed as it was still predicting 240miles on 89%.
Overall, impressed so far.
eta- I forgot to mention the poor rear visibility of the C40 compared to the XC40- which is probably the biggest relative detriment of the sloped styling. However, it's better than I was led to believe from the reviews & with the 360 camera & sensors, I wouldn't say it's much of an issue.

Thanks maddog really useful. I'm probably going with the XC40 due to needing to get a large dog crate and all my kit in the back. Just contemplating the rather large cost of the thing.
Oh quick question if you don't mind - tyres - are they a staggered set up? (Appear to be on the website).

Discovered yesterday that if there is a software update running you cannot unlock the car or charge it. Unfortunately discovered this after calling Volvo emergency assistance and sending an email to technical help for the charger (newly installed this week and the first time trying it out). Oops!

Yep, I tend to do these overnight, though the last couple have been quite small updates. oop north said:

that sounds a bit of a bloody liberty. I assume that's to prevent the possibility of 'bricking' the car if the update is interruptedpills said:
Thanks again maddog! Price is similar to my current stagged set up. Michelin look a bit cheaper.
No worries at all - and that's interesting to know about the Michelin tyre alternative- I didn't even realise they made an equivalent. Just ordered a single motor c40 on salary sacrifice. Its likely to cost me about 450 net over 3 years with insurance and maintenance. Currently have an id3 at 288 but with down payment/insurance etcetera the c40 is only about 50 a month more. I dont want it until mid April 23 but told Jan delivery (I can delay it). Seems short time frame knowing the industry delays and , tbh, I'm glad I don't need it until April.
It's the core which is poverty spec but pure or ultimate were 100 more a month. Interestingly a p11d price of 47k resulted in monthlies similar (less) than equivalent cars with p11d prices 10k less. Born, id3, Kona were all slightly more expensive

Nearly three months in, we've had one significant 'glitch' so far with the C40 a few weeks ago:
All the driver-aid systems mysteriously went down, one after the other (parking sensors, cameras, collision- avoidance, auto headlights, wipers, etc)- it was still drivable, but with most of the 'clever'-stuff not working & the dashboard lit up with error codes like a christmas tree. (To be honest the only ones that really mattered were the 360 camera & parking sensors, which are invaluable because of the poor rear visibility!)
A software update didn't solve it & the Volvo Home-care engineer couldn't sort it, so one trip back to Volvo dealership, with a hard reset/reboot & further software update later & it was back to normal.
Other than that hiccup, it continues to be a fine daily .
