Just had a smart meter fitted.

It's been an eye-opener as to just how much of our spend is the two Ev's we run so I looked on my supplier's website and saw they offer an EV special tariff. Currently am paying 31p / kWh. The EV scheme is at 39p/kwh peak and 4.5p for 5 hours every night (EDF).

We probably use about 20-30kwh / day between the two cars and 10-15kwh on the rest of the house - so, we'd save about £5-6 a day. Any downsides?

anyone else suggest a better EV tariff?

Octopus Go is another alternative worth considering. Not sure quite how the prices compare at the moment although Octopus were always better than EDF - don't forget about the daily standing charge when comparing!

There's a £50 credit to you (and the same to me) if you signed up via https://share.octopus.energy/witty-hare-753

There are no downsides really, although you have to be putting as much of your electrical usage into the overnight slot to really benefit. We manage something like 60% in our cheap hours so the savings really stack up! I use https://octocomparison.co.uk/comparison and it normally shows we save between 50% and 70% cost compared to being on the standard tariff... YMMV of course.

Are you allowed to install your own wind turbine to charge these?

With appropriate planning permission, and you don't have neighbours to upset.

Wind turbines are very effective in the right location, but they can be noisy.

You definitely don't want one on your roof, in your garden close to the house, you will notice it.

No chance where I am for a turbine.
Pretty sure panels won’t work either - the amount of south facing roof wouldn’t be enough to be useful

I'm on EDF Go Electric 35 until September this year: 4.5p/kWh 00.00-05.00GMT & 18.6p/kWh peak, plus 33.8p/day S/C.
With my usage I can fill up most days (nights) for less than £1.

I've been quite happy with that - in January had my first full six-month bill since buying EV and total spend overnight for six months was £62. It used to cost me more than that per week in petrol in the boxster.

Careful with the EDF tariff.

The also tie you in to a fixed rate Gas tariff at circa 11p per KW vs the 8p of the standard variable rate.

When I worked it out it was going to cost me move overall than staying on the standard tariff. If you use a lot of electricity charging during the off peak period it might work in your favour but do the maths.

I was waiting to go on to this once I received my electric car and came to the same conclusion as you - I wasn't actually saving anything overall especially if I could maintain doing most of my charging at work instead. I'm now debating whether it's worth putting a home charge point in at all!

I don’t have gas at home…. Does this mean they won’t offer the tariff just for electricity?

This Is the one I’m interested in…4.5p for five hours and 39p for the remainder - although, trying to set the preferred charging on the iPace is not as simple as you’d think.

I'm in the same boat; renewals are insane.

I can charge at work and worst case scenario i can top up at home on the 3 pin plug for a few hours and a few kW

Brief research suggests that i should just fall into the standard tariff until when / if things settle down

We are on the EDF Nest tariff its 29p/kw. I have a hybrid arriving this week and I've just had a podpoint installed.

I contacted EDF and asked if the do an ev rate, perhaps overnight. No, they said...but could pay £160 to have an economy 7 meter fitted so that I can charge at 19p a unit but the daytime rate goes up to 36p a unit.

Told them I thought I'd give it a miss.

I'd get them to confirm that... I'm with EDF on their Go Electric 35 tariff; that's 35 hours per week at 4.5p kWh (00.00-05.00 GMT). All of my overnight usage June 2021-January 2022 was £60 - -that was over 5,000 miles plus whatever the fridge, freezer, etc. uses in that timeframe. Prime rate is 18p kWh.
Obvs, you won't get quite that tariff now, but they deffo still showing 4.5p on their site: https://www.edfenergy.com/sites/default/files/goel...

This is the one I've opted for. The peak rates are now 39p! So, a fair old hike. Off peak is still at 4.5p. I can charge what I need for my daily use in the 5 hours per night.

I gave up trying to do timed charging on my I pace . The ETron wasn’t very good either .
Current cars both work really well with a zappi charger , one car nearly always tipping up every night

Just checked the Ovo Drive tariff (you have to call them). The rate has gone up from 37p to 64p per unit in the few weeks I was away on holiday thinking about it. I had just installed a compatible smart charger (Indra Smart Pro) in readiness.

Should'a', would'a', could'a',...

I can't find an EV tariff that is accepting new users at the moment. Just moved into a place that is currently supplied by Sainsburys (Eon) who don't have anything suitable.

My EV arrives early OCT so I have time to shop around

I phoned up Bulb for their EV tariff as my Octopus is coming to an end. I got the impression their tariff was open for new joiners, but you'd go on their Standard tariff first.

I'll probably stick with Octopus GO for another 12 months.

Hard to confirm, but I don't believe bulbs prices are fixed on EV tariff.

Are bulb taking new customers? Thought they went bust.
