The best MPG of 69 MPG was obtained over 6 days worth of mainly short journeys, so arguably they are well suited to a mainly town/short journey driver, who needs the flexibility/security of a petrol engine for the odd long journey.
Nail on the head for private PHEV ownership I think. I have a 10 mile each way commute and usually shortish weekend journeys too. So an EV would work, but a recent PHEV also does it all on electric.

However I also go to either the Lakes or Cornwall fairly regularly with wife/child/dog/lots of luggage/roof box so need an estate and don't want the restriction of charging en route or at destination. Not really any EV options to suit this.

PHEV works perfectly for this usage.

If you're doing mostly long journeys where you're running on petrol a PHEV doesn't really suit other than for CC tax savings.

100% Agreed. I have it purely for the CC tax savings.
