BMW iX - anybody able to tell me what it's like in the wild?
Discussion
Saw at 1am last night on my ring camera that someone was snooping around the IX. He had a look around and under the car but I think the fact it was plugged in deterred them. Any ideas what is good option for additional security? Thinking a Disklok for the steering wheel not sure if anyone else is using with the odd steering wheel design on this car?
Sad state of affairs that you have to create as much deterrence from thieving scum!

Oh don't say that! I had a Ghost immobiliser on my 330e for piece of mind but thought being a plugged in EV might deter the pondlife?!Sad state of affairs that you have to create as much deterrence from thieving scum!

Agree mate Tesla wins on that basis for long runs as the supercharger network is a massive win. With my personal mileage and just local driving at around just 4k miles a year this works for me. The Model Y is still a great car but the IX has that little luxury touch expected from BMW.
I read good analogy before that Tesla is a car brand by a tech company learning the market and the BMW is an experienced car company using the latest tech they see Tesla implement. On this basis it is good they are pushing each other to build better products for the consumer.
At this stage, what exactly is the benefit of the supercharger network? I saw a stat the other day that the number of none Tesla rapid and very rapid chargers now exceeds the % of none Tesla EV's on the road. IE there are as many high speed chargers per driver of a none Tesla car than a Tesla car now, thanks to the rapid expansion of the networks last year.I read good analogy before that Tesla is a car brand by a tech company learning the market and the BMW is an experienced car company using the latest tech they see Tesla implement. I guess it deters but not enough and I don't even wanna get in the world of parking post or a bollard! I am not sure how good the in built security is on the car from remote start etc (I don't have the comfort pack so no keyless entry). As I said just a shambles that can't have anything nice these days without worrying about it being watched like a hawk.Edited by jgrewal on Wednesday 28th February 14:41

There is some logic in leaving it plugged even if its not charging, as the car won't move if a charging plug is locked in, and forcibly tearing it out is probably not going to help.Sad state of affairs that you have to create as much deterrence from thieving scum!
You could try leaving a sign in the drivers window saying its routinely left with 3 miles range

How about “No electricity left in this vehicle overnight”? You could try leaving a sign in the drivers window saying its routinely left with 3 miles range

For max security, whether at home or when out and about, I suggest using the digital key plus on your smartphone, rather than physical key. The UWB tech will prevent against relay attacks. I've got an iX too. Never tried a Disklok. Personally, I don't think it's that desirable to thieves (vs all the other vehicles out there)Sad state of affairs that you have to create as much deterrence from thieving scum!
I've had a demo iX for a few days this week and I have to say I love it! I had an EV6 for a few days and that was impressive, but the iX takes it to a new level. A true luxury SUV EV. I'm sold and will be placing an order for one imminently.
I've had X5's for 10+ years so am used to a big car but the room inside iX is ridiculous! There's a definite familiarity for people used to BMW but with a healthy dose of cool modern tech. It will take a while to get used to almost everything being touchscreen as opposed to real buttons, but I don't see that as an issue.
The adaptive cruise took me by surprise. Not sure if it only happens when using the nav, but the car slows as it approaches roundabouts or when you come to a turning you need to take. Incredible. Obviously this is not specific to EV's or the iX, but I've never experienced it before and thought it was really cool.
I was in the entry level iX40 and like another poster said, it's not silly quick ala Tesla, but it certainly more than quick enough. Impressive for a 2.5 ton vehicle.
It's a big thumbs up from me!

The implementation of modes is a bit silly. You should be able to customise them and set preferred modes as defaults. I used idrive 8.5 in an X5 50e and there seemed to be more customisation available in what was otherwise the same software.
I don't know about the 40 or 50 but I understand the M60 with air suspension will lower its height slightly in 'Sport' mode and that more power is accessible, so it does change the driving dymanics rather than just the sound effects and steering weight.
But then the height would also lower similarly in efficient mode or in any other above certain speeds.
It's hard to know what it's doing half the time.

I had hoped it wasn't that desirable (just to me!) as an electric family SUV. I don't think I have the digital key function its only on the comfort access which is not included on the base package. So, having read this thread (and others on pistonheads) before ordering via Salary Sacrifice on leaseplan, thought I should add to it!
Mine turned up yesterday - so quiet to drive and comfortable - soaks up poor roads. It is the basic 40 with 21 inch wheels, just floats around a gravel pot hole car park! Got the parking assistant plus so get the 360 above view - worth getting! Also glad I didn't get the M version as it has black roof lining whereas the light grey makes it much better for the kids in the back. As everyone has said, electric is instant fast! Huge step up from a 2011 Passat Estate TDI.
Anyway, seems to work well with Octopus Agile and Ohme pod charger so all good and thanks to the posters on this forum!
Colour is Blue Ridge Mountain - the paint changes depending on the light adding more green as it gets brighter.
