Engineers haven’t made a mistake, it’s a very easy bit of tech to implement and people like it, doesn’t mean it’s the most efficient way of driving.

There is no impact on safety associated with coasting in an EV.
Coasting involves lower levels of deceleration than braking, which has an impact on following vehicles needing to brake earlier than expected.
Deceleration without brake lights being triggered also impacts those following vehicles.
Large numbers of people coasting fills takes a lot more road space (that huge space in front of the coaster) has been taken from the space behind.

"No impact on safety" is difficult to support.

It’s no different to backing off in petrol or diesel car if set to low regen. As anyone who drives a BEV will know. Or feathering the throttle for that matter.
