After 5 years….and will not replace it!
Oh dear, the three hydrogen car owners will have to drive to either Gatwick or Heathrow now!
Don't worry, given how much Toyota are spending on hydrogen development, I'm sure that the Mirai owner's will be well looked after (perhaps Toyota UK will back their Mirais and scrap them?)Oh dear, the three hydrogen car owners will have to drive to either Gatwick or Heathrow now!

Don't cheer too loudly- this installation and electrolyser were built by ITM Power in Sheffield which looks like quite an exciting company. We should be bigging up UK engineering/design/manufacturing rather than automatically slating new technologies.
We can only have so many influencers, drop shippers and property developers

Meanwhile, more smoke and mirrors…

Why not just tell us what the actual efficiency is, its not like a number between 1 and 100 uses up a lot of space on a page.

Freudian slip: owner's as in the singular? Made the me smile anyway...Edited by Fastlane on Sunday 18th September 09:52

Sad to say, ITM appears to be struggling. Its shares have just taken a hit and the long-standing chief exec is stepping down. Hopefully it will pull through because, as you say, we need new enterprise. We can only have so many influencers, drop shippers and property developers

Bumf in their own sales brochure specs suggests 54-58% cruise efficiency, depending on model.https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportat...

So powerplant % efficiency comparison; mid-40’s for a modern diesel, mid-50’s for this FCEV, and mid-80’s for BEV.
What does the efficiency or carbon footprint of this FCEV look like once hydrogen production has been factored in? Still better than diesel?

Problem is, a lot of investors think short term (next quarter/year). You've got to think at least medium term with a business like this. I'd like to think they'd grow significantly over the next few decades, but many just don't want to wait that long.Fusion777 said:

Quite agree that short-termism is a blight on technical development. However ITM has been going for two decades and the future looked bright a couple of years ago but now they seem to be in trouble:

In addition one of their major clients/collaborators, Linde of Germany, has decided not to work with them on a massive project in the US.

There isn’t the demand to make it feasible at the moment. I’m sure that will change in future.
I'm open to correction but only Toyota makes and sells a hydrogen powered car, and if you can't buy hydrogen they won't be selling any of those cars. If there are no hydrogen powered cars on the road nobody will invest in building a hydrogen refueling station.Chicken and egg situation.

Toyota and Hyundai.Chicken and egg situation.
Currently on Autotrader there is a 2017 Toyota Mirai for sale for £29k and a 2019 Hyundai Nexo for £46k.
Those are the only two used fuel cell cars on A/T.
The Mirai is being advertised as 'very rare', maybe the seller is hoping someone will see it as a collector's item...
There is also a new Nexo with 3-year lease being advertised at £1600 a month.

But the sales numbers, or rather lack of, mean that both cars won't be in production for much longer.
