I broke down outside Lisieux last year
The AA put me in a hotel overnight and taxied me onto a ferry to return to Pompey
Then provided a hire car to get me home from the ferry port
Then brought the car home so I could fix it
(non-standard MG Midget with Ford gearbox and knackered Saab clutch cylinder, French breakdown garage said NO WAY)
Cost me less than a ton.
I am never going to not take out AA cover again when I pop across to LM even though I had many years of no problem trips before.
Other cover is available, any cover is essential.

Essential. A mate broke down in his TVR just as we got to the last toll before Le Mans in 2008. He wasn't going to bother but I badgered him into it and thank goodness he took it. Fully recovered to the UK for £36 or there abouts. That was the extra he paid for the insurance which covered the breakdown.
