You can get magnetic ones similar to L plates, they don't cost too much and won't do anything to the paintwork!
brilliant on a TVR
Derr, took me a few moments to get that one!! I'll go back to sleep now.
A lad in Halfords tried to sell me some, I told him the bootlid was aluminium and so it wouldnt work, he then insisted that a Turbo R bootlid wasnt aluminium. Ho hum.
Never fitted one. Never had any trouble. You're also supposed to have headlight deflectors. How many UK cars do you see with them on ? (Rain must have washed them off, monsieur). Ever seen a foreign car over here with them on ? When I started driving in France you were supposed to have yellow headlights !

My thought exactly! Class.
The Euro plates apparently are still not actually a legal substitute for the full size GB sticker - something to do with a cock up on the bureacratic front. But after the sticky gunge my £1.99 Halfords GB left, I might risk it.
I got my plates from Fancyplates.com. They give you the option of a black band instead of the blue... and I cannot find anywhere in the DVLA regs that says the yellow stars MUST be on a blue background. It mentions the stars alright but not the specific background colour - I mean, just cos the flag is blue? and it just sooo wouldn't go with yellow!

really?? I had read before that the GB on the plate was sufficient under the legalities, but the England/Scotland/Wales etc thing wasnt.
Blue goes with yellow a treat Al - in my eyes they are 2 colours that go together brilliantly - even thinking back to when I looked at a Megane convertible in yellow with a navy roof - looked great.

aah, but it's the wrong shade of blue
And both my roof and the numbers on my plate are black!
But seriously, I rang someone at DVLA and certainly in 2003, the euro plates were not yet strictly legal... may be ok now.

Had this problem at the weekend.
Someone had removed my GB sticker (James?!) and I arrived at port to
find I needed one and they only sold magnetic ones.
Said to Mr Shopkeeper, "No good for my car it's not metal, haven't you got any stickers?"
"No sir, not metal?" he replied, "What have you got then, a Reliant Robin?"
I and said "No, a TVR" and he went red and Mrs Shopkeeper laughed at Mr Shopkeeper and said "You idiot, just a bit of difference!"
So in the end we had to buy the magnetic one and stick it with tape to the rear window.
You also now need a warning triangle, headlight deflectors, spare bulbs, and first aid kit by law.

I bought one of these GB plates and killed 2 birds with one stone.
I got 'done' for taking a half inch space out of my number plate (as you do) to make the name DVLA sold me and had to get a proper one done.
Thus I got a GB one to help with the Le Mans stuff. This then seemed to push the letters almost back to where I had them anyway!!!!!!
Still, I win.

As far as I remember, a GB sticker is not a legally required. What is legally required is that you car is identifiably from another country, which with a standard British number plate it is. But you don't have to identify which country that is. Don't try and explain that to a French Policeman, just stick that sticker/magnet on.
