Thanks everýone. Plenty to go at there.
I just want to check a few more things. Firstly drink! Are you allowed to take beer into the campsite or do they force you to buy theirs?
I guess there is some restrictions on beer going into the circuit itself?
I've seen a load of comments about boot searches and security searches but I'm wondering what the official stance is.

Depends on where you are staying - we stay private with no facilities, so bring whatever we like. When we stayed in Beaujesour there was security - even though we were on a private site within it we hid our booze. Some days searched, other days not - no idea what the rules are but the searches are pretty weak.I just want to check a few more things. Firstly drink! Within the circuit I hear totally different things all the time, so to keep it simple I just bring a thermosflask filled with my booze - Baileys with ice as it happens (looks like coffee!!!). They never check the flask, they just observe and move me on.
There was a comment about bikes earlier - absolutely the best thing we ever did, though some people will disagree, we live on ours. We buy folding bikes off ebay and Gummtree - never paid more than 50 quid. Buy 16" wheel ones, they fold up tiny. I paid 15 quid for the last one, so don't waste money thinking you need a Brompton!

(Beer) I'm wondering what the official stance is.
It's France so the official stance...depends (on which day/gate/person) you're dealing with. The basic rule is no glass inside the circuit, so you should get stopped and searched going in either on foot or, if on a campsite inside the circuit (Maison Blanche/Houx/Garage Vert/Tertre Rouge/Arnage, and maybe Beausjour and Mulsanne), by car. I think last year they was officially a limit on how much alcohol you could take in too BUT - this is France, so you could go in at 10am Thursday and find every car getting searched/acohol limits enforced, go back out/in at 1pm and find no cars being checked at all, back out/in at 3pm and find cars being checked but only for glass, not volume. Oh and the rule interpritation used on Wednesday may be completely different from that you find used on Thursday, etc.
Camping outside the circuit (Bleu) I never once had my car searched this year - and unlike the previous 3 or so years where I'd always had my bag searched entering the circuit I never once had it searched going in to the circuit either this year! As I said, it's France so I'm sure the next person to post will recount how they had their car and bags searched every single time
