Le Mans - Epinettes - TV use and wifi/mobile networks/aerial

Hi all,

Off to Le Mans again this year but we wanted to take a TV/Projector for the racing and also the Euros while we're there. Any advise on what people use to get a reception would be awesome. e.g. aerial, WiFi device, satellite etc. We have fire sticks and can use paid services through them its just internet connection concerns. What do people use?

There are hotspot devices from telekom or vodafone which works with your mobile phone card when you put it in. You can look what you have in your country as I only know it for Germany.
But I can not tell you how good the connection will be.

I camp with some Dutch and they always bring Satellite. One year we had a problem setting up the satellite and used data for a day, unsurprisingly it chewed through a lot of data

While there is mobile coverage at Le Mans and the do put in temporary event towers to increase it there's also 300,000 people trying to use their mobile so speeds can be very variable (just after the start is the worst time, as 300,000 phones try to back-up 300,000 videos of the start to the cloud).

There's some WiFi around - but most of it is secured and what is public generally gets swamped.

The classic way to get video is an old satellite dish/STB pointing to somewhere that gives a FTA broadcast of whatever you want to watch. That's generally with non-English commentary so you get to play the game of muting the audio and trying to sync up the pictures with RLM.

During the week, there's enough 4G to follow the practice on the WEC app, and we connected a phone to a tv, but by the weekend you just don't get enough signal, so satellite dish is the only answer. The place is too well lit for a projector, unless you're indoors. They worked well during Covid

It may all change by June, and they expect us to use the Fanzones like that at Epinettes. If only they'd transmit locally.

Does anyone know of other TV sources other than Eurosport and WEC, Is any of it on local TV?

It is normally shown on a French channel receivable through a Freeview aerial. We took a generic satellite box last year (as Sky Q has killed being able to take a multi-room box out now) and found it on French Freeview.

That new Fanzone screen worked well at Epinettes last year. Carry your folding chair and some cold beers over to the big screen and sit and watch the action for a bit.

Maybe you're one of the never-leave-track-side types, the 'dead people' you see somehow asleep on the Arnage banking at 4am right where the LMP2s used to bark and split flames on the downshift into the final right hander but I think most of us take a break for food/a couple of (better tasting) €0.58 Koenigsbier's from Carrefour rather than another €8 Kronenbourg/catch a little sleep - and being able to nip to a screen when RLM report something interesting happening on track's useful. Likewise when the night racing alarm goes off at 3am and RLM tells you we're now into hour 2 of a safty car period with no sign of it ending soon while I probably won't get up and trek out to Arnage/Milsanne I might go and watch on TV for a bit.

I certainly don't sleep during the race, other than some unintentional nodding dog moments up in the stand in the last 2-3 hours. I wait all year for this and I'm not about to plan to sleep during the race - certainly not during the night as that is what Le Mans is really all about to me. I still eat and drink but I mainly keep myself awake by taking photos... I make sure I get a really good night's sleep on Friday night and then I'm dead to the world in my bed from about 8pm on Sunday. I normally drive out to Arnage and Indianapolis around midnight/1pm and then on to Mulsanne at about 4 am. I confess though that I found last year pretty hard. I was much more tired in the early hours than usual even though I didn't wander around much. By 5 am I was completely cream-crackered.

Sunday night is the England game. 8pm so maybe quieter on the networks by then haha

I remember the days when we'd reappear out of the bushes at dawn. Nowadays I nod off about 5pm. It started with those Mazdas - They could put me to sleep, even at close range.

I tried looking at Freeview a few years ago, with no luck, so stuck to the satellite. From memory the transmitter is to the south.

Do you remember the name of the channel?
