it was decided at le mans but details are pretty sketchy at the moment
basically it will be called the "Le Mans Endurance Series" this year will be the first race as a prelude to next years four races at Spa, Nurburgring, Silverstone and Monza...
the race is open for the same cars as Le Mans and has been set up so smaller european teams can compete in a high profile series (without going to america) and get a selection for le mans, rather than the odd-ball entries you often see (witness: Norma, XL Ferrari, no Morgan - though that was their fault!)
if you want a "second le mans" this is the only year it'll be running in france (on the buggati circuit only) so head down now!!!

PSSorry, been negelectful - here is some info. There are "lots" of things implied within here that could be dramatic for the future of European sportscar racing. Suspect that hotel availability will be much more prevalent (and desirable in Nov).
Le Mans Endurance Series
1. The end of season race will be on the Bugatti Circuit on November 2 (not in October, as initially announced by the ACO, in their newsletter), with 48 cars permitted to start (over a maximum of six hours duration).
2. As expected, four major races will take place next year: discussions are under way with Monza, the Nurburgring, Silverstone and Spa.
3. The 2004 calendar will be known in September.
4. Le Mans Endurance Series is a working title – more in September.
5. 12 cars (three from each class) will receive automatic entries for the 2004 Le Mans 24 Hours, based on the results of the November 2 race.
6. For 2005, 24 Hours entries will be allocated thus: eight from the 2004 ALMS, eight from Le Mans, eight from the new series of four races and four from the FIA GT Championship.
7. The ‘Le Mans Endurance Series’ will be organised by the ACO and Stephane Ratel’s SRO company, but with the ACO providing the chairman and playing the leading role.
8. Teams gaining automatic entries for Le Mans (28, more than half the field) will have their places confirmed six to eight months before the race.

Only 4 months to go, do you reckon we'll be able to get tickets in time?!? Judging by the ACO's track record....
Don't forget that there's a Sportscar race at Donnington on the 9th of August as well
That's right . . . they're very generously giving the PLM guys an extra seven days to get back home. I recall Hugh Chamberlain muttering about this at Le Mans when the event was first announced, suggesting that he couldn't afford to do both if they were only a fortnight apart. The extra week may mean more entrants in each race, although the Le Mans race already looks likely to be oversubscribed. Sounds like the perfect recipe for more Gallic tact and diplomacy.
