What a shower of b*stards. Deliberately to circumvent the protection that the law affords an innocent buyer.

least they should be recording their interest, unlike the 'logbook loan' cowboys (although they should too).

True, makes me very twitchy about buying a car privately these days, and it's still voluntary to register the interest I believe bandit.

I tend to use www.iTextcheck.co.uk now as they have a much better service including finance data.

All finanacial registration with HPI is voluntary....friend of mine has just been hit for 32k by a finance company who didn't register interest in a car.

Hpi guarantee is not very good.....has very strict conditions, and you would not be covered if the finance company hadn't registered interest with them (obviously)

As far as I'm aware, you can't.

Correct you can't. Check the issue date on logbook and ask questions if its recently issued

Bit late in the day but there are a couple of sites I've used in the past that compare HPI Check Report companies.

http://bmff.co.uk and http://netcar.co.uk

Thanks

Check out this site

www.totalcarcheck.co.uk

The guy set it up after his father got ripped off buying a car and didn't check the vehicle history.this was due to the likes of HPI, RAC, experian etc charge the earth for the full check, this site does it all for £1.99

Nice to see consumers fighting back!

Except they don't check outstanding finance which I would have thought is the most important !

Only if you think that outstanding financemeans that you lose your car/money.

Of course: HPI are quite happy to perpetuate this nonsense.
