Do most private buyers simply go on price? Car not selling.

Yes, I do. See my anxiety-related posts in the health section.

Sorry. smile
laugh Not the response I was expecting.

Good luck with the sale. Be prepared to do a bit of haggling, and have a lowest price in mind that you'd accept for the sake of shifting the car on. Try not to get too worked up about it - it's just two guys chatting about a car that interests them mutually. Don't be afraid to tell them you've got another viewing lined up, but don't forget the value of having someone standing in front of you with a handful of cash.

Oh, and do report back.

No worries. It's the way my brain is wired (drives my fiancée potty sometimes) hehe

Thanks for the tips. I'll consider everything you say.

Chap coming to see the car is called Atilla.

Oh yes, forgot to say that whatever happens later will be quite quick.

I only have about half an hour to spend with the chap this afternoon. He has ok'd this though.

I have never taken a half our to sell a car. 8/10 if they make the effort to come view it they are planning to buy it if it meets their expectations. Every car I have sold privately has gone to the first person to view it, and usually for very close to the asking price.

Test drive done. Potential purchaser was a lovely chap. He needs a car this week as his has expired.

He didn't have fully comp insurance, so I took him out to the deepest, darkest parts of where I live and let him drive the car down a quiet, country lane.

Unfortunately, no sale at the moment though as he has to consult with his wife before purchssing. He is also looking at a Honfa Accord from a dealer. He said he will make his decision in a few days and get back to me.

I told him I have a viewing on Friday.

He genuinely seemed taken aback by how good the car is. Couldn't praise it ebough. So, we'll see if he wants to buy it.

The only bad thing about the test drive was him trying to start the car when it was already running. Made a nice crunching noise! smile

We'll see what the viewer on Friday thinks. In the meantime, I've had an email over pistonheads from someone else showing an interest.

Gawd, all this reminds me just how much I hate selling cars. I always seem to sell them too cheap and buy them too dear!

It might be minuscule but not unheard of. I came into contact with a chap through work who presented himself to the bank with £1500 worth of forged notes, only to be told to take a seat as the police were on their way. He was a foreign national chap who had just sold his BMW. I felt bad for him as he had a poor grasp of english and he was understandably upset. It is, as you say, easily mitigated though.

He's not going to buy it.

However, seems like you now have the price right to attract interest, so GLWS!

Hmm, as he needs a car this week and was pleased with the condition of the car I'm surprised he didn't buy it.

Onwards and upwards to Friday then!

Indeed. He drove over an hour to see the car, genuinely looked really interested, then said he couldn't commit for a few days.

Oh well. Like you say, see how Friday goes. smile

Thanks.

Amazing how dropping it under £2k has prompted interest.

I've had a few of those, over praising is usually a sign of a time waster, when you find a genuine buyer they'll be 99% ready before they get there, I sold my Impreza to a guy that practically threw the money at me as he walked up the drive, same with the yeti.

I have had a few odballs though, like an african guy who paid, shot off down the drive, stopped dead at the end , backed up then asked me if my Insurance covered him to drive it to the docks , er no

I think its a nightmare trying to achieve market value selling a car privately at the moment unless its desirable and scarce...and it needs to be both and thats why its scarce! Or of course you price it at giveaway money.

My recent experience selling a couple of cars privately (a couple of months back) is that nobody wants to pay market price for anything, regardless of whats been spent, history, condition, mileage etc....might make it more saleable but ultimately its always got to be a steal.

if I'm in the market and I find the right car at a fair price I'm happy but maybe thats just me. Surely not everyone buying a car is after a quick buck?! Or is it just todays mentality?! Not that I'm a grumpy old git or anything smile

Both cars sold were so called desirable and high end models and had everything going for them, pictures were good and decent write ups. I started out at suggested values and I dropped the price further but the offers would just get lower and lower (lower than WBAC) If I priced at 12 I'd get offered 10 and if I priced at 10 I'd get offered 8.

I'd love to buy a car at wheeler dealer money but needless to say a career in car sales is not on the cards.

I'm here with a £3500k car! Its the nicest, lowest miles and cheapest comparable one one Ebay with a great spec, receipts for the fixed common faults and has rare spec of leather and auto. One test drive only... Its a petrol not a Diesel - many seem to want only Diesel - good luck with that on a 10yr old car in town!

Its a common mistake to price private cars a couple of hundred below dealers prices and hope for the best. Lets face it you'd want it to be well over £500 cheaper if it were you buying at this level. I priced accordingly! V slow for a cracking car... Comedy offers can still take a running jump - but they are there like vultures hoping to grind you down wink

A chap delivered a parcel to my house a few weeks ago, just as my car had gone on sale and was on the drive with 'for sale' signs up. He said he was looking for a car and mine looked really nice.

When I told him it was petrol, his face dropped. He said he would never get a petrol car as diesel is cheaper.

The brain washing of the masses seems to have worked a treat.

I asked him how much mileage he did. He said only a bit at the weekends as he spends all week in a delivery van. I did wonder why he was after a diesel for low miles, but didn't bother to make any comments. smile

I think that's what it is mate. One and only test driver was very concerned on mpg so reset the computer and it gave him 31mpg in town (even I was impressed!), told him it would do over 40 on a run. This from a zingy little 2 litre... No turbos to go or injectors at £250 a pop or HP fuel pumps to wear out...or DPF on a 10 yr old car...

He bought a fwd Diesel Polo...

In 6 months i'll be looking for £3k runabout and the Mazda 3 2.0 Sport is top of my list. I've been keeping an eye on prices and yours looks very well priced. Only thing that would put me off is the colour, but for less than £2k I could live with it.

I reckon you'll have it sold by the end of the weekend.

You don't notice the colour when you are sat in the vehicle. wink

If you want any info about the model in general, just let me know.
