The E320 CDi is a good call.
I have had a 2004 Estate for 9 years now and even with 120k miles it drives pretty much like new and has every toy you need to break....
It's got plenty of grunt although the engine is a bit gruff when compared with a modern diesel.
The 7 seats are also very useful, but a rare option.

Later W211's are more reliable than the earlier ones....but the older straight six diesel is more reliable than the later V6 so it is horses for courses.

The V6 one is a nice engine but can (and do) have problems with swirl flaps jamming, turbo actuators failing, valve bodies on the 7-speed auto, alternators are a weak point too (and water cooled so damn expensive).

At that sort of price range I'd probably go for the latest straight six one I could find and prey the SBC unit has plenty of time left on it.

Not a diesel, but on 10K miles a year why would you need one?

OP - lots of electrical niggles can be caused by a failing battery. Try a new one before condemning the current car.

Volvo S60 D5 worth a look if you are ok with a big 4 door saloon?

Great value £2k to £4k for an 06 plate with fsh and depends on miles
Good on fuel and D5 has 185 bhp
Mega comfy seats - quite incredible how comfortable these are on long trips
Nice to drive

Thank you very much guys for all these great replies, the Mercs are looking good (and I thought the black mondoe was also not a bad deal) and not too bad on cost / mileage so I'd say they are now top of my list - particularly the E320 Cdi (thanks for the tip), otherwise that 7 series was a beast!

On another note I'm also checking out personal contract hire as well, mainly the Skoda Yeti 1.2 DSG, any of you had one of these? not exactly a cruiser but its new .... EDIT actually just had a good look at one, hmm, doesn't quite fit anywhere near my requirements (not sure why I contemplated it in the first place, dazzled by "new car")! i'll stick to the Mercs, just got find a good one now.

What about the Chrysler? That's mostly an old E-class underneath but with better value for money and funkier styling
