Possibly a daft question

Do you hold a B+E licence ?
Yes I do as I am over the age where you need a separate test

Trouble is, an 'orse is 1 big, tall and largely mental animal. You could put the same weight of sheep in the back of an Ifor Williams and they would tow much easier, because the weight would be much lower and not move about so much. But when Dobbin moves, the whole shooting match is going to want to go with it, so you need a decent vehicle. A D4, which woud be the best car for the job, obviously has loads of power for the dead weight, but your pulling a (very) live load.

A none HGV 7.5 tonner is the best tool for the job and anything less is going to be a compromise. The actual chassis would be quite cheap, you could always buy a cattle truck body, but that wouldn't look good at the pony club.

At work, lorries out number trailers by 2 to 1 now. They are all old and run on a shoe string.

We tow an Ifor Williams 506 with 2 horses. We started out with a Discovery 2 which did a grand job but fell to bits. Now we have a Ranger 3.2 on lease on it's great. Pulls no problem up hill and wet ground, only negative it can be a bit lurchy on uneven roads at speed. It's pretty darn good as our everyday vehicle too. In fact, for the first time in my life I might buy the same again.

The Disco is an option and I also take the point on a nonHGV 7.5 tonne vehicle. It might depend on the property we buy as to what is practical and whether my wife wants to drive a full horse van, hence why I was looking at cars....

Thanks for all the help, it's given me some things to think about and I have a couple of months to decide

Just to update this old thread......

We bought a landcruiser on a 55 plate and ran it for 4 years and really liked it but it went pop!!!!!

Just bought a 3.2 Ford Ranger wildtrak which is much better at pulling and works ok as a car for the times we need it to do other duties.

Thought about an L200 but they are not as plentiful around here
