What on earth is poverty spec!?! These Golfs have more than enough gadgets/electric gimmicks and lazy features.

What are all these essential features that people expect?

There's simply no pleasing some.
Vs what they COULD have specced. Because they're all cheapo lease deals.
Having looked at the configuration tool on the VW site the most expensive items you can spec on a Golf R are
+ £1k on different alloys (I'd rather aftermarket OZ or BBS),
+ £1k on the Pro NAV (does it really offer anything more than a headunit with Google maps?)
+ £1k on panoramic roof,
+ £800 on Dynamic ride control (i'd rather choose my own aftermarket coilovers)
+ £2500 if you want the nappa two tone leather.

Out of that list only the panoramic roof stands out as something that I'd contemplate paying VW for, every other option has a better alternative from third party suppliers.

Nearly every other option is stuff like upgraded mud flaps, chrome or carbon trim details, floor mats, bike racks/roof racks and other luggage related tat which are hardly exciting nor likely to influence a potential second hand buyer when faced with dozens of 2-3 year old Golf Rs.

Only poor people finance cars IIRC scratchchin

I had a mate who spec'd up his R to circa 37k. Leather, reverse cam etc. Traded it in 2 years later for 18k.

Nineteen grand loss! Almost £800 a month vs lease deals at a 1/4 of that. And he had to pay for tax too hehe.
Exactly. You must be too poor not to be able to spunk an extra 12k on not financing.
Off to the council thread with you wink

Boggo standard lease R costs me 189 quid a month.

Adding the crap nav unit adds about 70 quid a month to that.

Friend of a friend bought theirs with some options at the time when the cheap lease deals were on. Cost 34k and 2 years on its worth 14k less.

Who's the mug ??
£189/month? Kinell where are these deals - wouldn't mind one myself for that money

My golf R is standard spec except for DSG & Met paint and is absolutely perfect. I've driven for 30 years without the need for a camera to help me park, blind spot warning the same. VW leather isn't great so not worth paying for. On a lease so bought my 19" wheels myself so won't lose any money at the end. Sunroof £1000 option I'm not paying for you to get for free. VW sat nav is poor compared to my phone and again was a £1000 option I have no use for as in general I know where I'm going and when I don't I have it free on my phone and it comes out the speakers. You get where I'm going here?extras in general aren't worth it which is why you may find it hard to find what you're looking for. To the idiot who suggested people who own an R can't afford them you sound bitter.

I bought mine in 14 through PCP with the desire to buy it out right at the end (wont be happening now) and I didn't spec a single extra. Why? I don't need the fads, to be frank there's 20 different things it does that I don't need, I bought it because I liked the car, how it drove, how it made me feel at the time and that was it. Like previously mentioned, iPhone satnav works perfectly fine for me connected through the media system, didn't see the need for the 19's and I'm more than capable of parking in a spot without a camera. Winter packs and Audio packs weren't available at the time, but frankly the speakers are adequate.

Ill be selling mine/handing it back this year. I've tweeked it to stage 1.5 uprated clutch included and its perfect as it is. I don't suspect ill see more than 19k for it, but I didn't care for residuals when I bought it and I don't now. ~~ Open to offers anyway~~

Really don't understand the used market fascination with "optional extras". A car is for driving, what the hell does it matter if your steering wheel is heated or you have auto-function boot close?

It's an every day car and not a weekend toy. Optional extras all add something to the car to make it better or more convenient to live with.

What I fail to understand is people think it's ok to modify cars they don't belong to them. Hopefully the next owner doesn't end up having issues and having any claims rejected due to the remap being detected once you hand it back.

My gf apires to a car where you don't have to manually open and close the boot :-).

Whether you lease or buy, it doesn't matter. I love my R estate and wouldn't have anything else in the same price range. For me it is perfect for my needs. Some love it, some hate it. I couldn't care less what people think.

The other day some guy in a posh Range Rover was eyeing it up big-time and gave me the thumbs up and 'nice car mate' etc. Some love it, some hate, we are all opinionated to some degree eg I wouldn't touch a Peugeot, Citroen etc, but that's me.

Spec on the R is whatever you can justify. I was lucky to add quite a few things because of the huge discount I got, but that was just good timing on my part. Base spec (except for the lack of sat nav on the mk7 R), is still pretty amazing, even the standard seats, which I decided not to spec up. I prefer the standard seats and the leather too expensive anyway.

My intention was to buy it, hence the modifications. Its ran ~400bhp >400lbs/ft of torque for over a year without issues and quarterly maintenance at a VW specialist.

I aren't staying in country and by next year i'll be the other side of the world, which has led to me getting rid.

Still haven't convinced me on the extras either, overpriced unnecessary fads
