Who are you getting quotes from? My step son was quoted significantly less than that. It's a tedious task but you'll need to get quotes from as many companies as possible. Have you considered a 'black box'?
A black box would ruin the e30, which is a perfect car and it might be because i live in a city and only have 1 year ncb.

The whole point of an e30 is to drive at inappropriate speeds and make sudden right hand turns everywhere + yanno trespassing on dirt car parks to pretend you're a rally car driver. All of the above will lead to an instant ban from your black box insurance policy.

And you've clearly never had a black box policy.

You are still chatting bks.

Get a cheaper car and use the remainder for the insurance.

Eg. E46 320Cl 2.2 M Sport
Low mileage, 168 bhp

https://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/...

Spend a bit refreshing the suspension and maybe upgrading brakes.
Still leaves plenty for insurance.

I suggested the OP doing the above to his current car but he said the insurance killed that idea off.

Are you using cost High to Low on the Comparison site you're using?

These are ridiculous costs.

Also - will and E30 have an OBD Port to plug a telematics box into?

Thanks for looking into a complete suspension and brake rework for me, you clearly know your stuff.
But here in the uk you have to declare mods on your insurance, so I got a quote on my car with these mods: £7.8k
Insurance companies hate young drivers with mods.
How old is your BMW?

you can improve the handling greatly by just refreshing the suspension and brakes with OEM specification parts and you won't have to declare them either.

Assuming it is over 10 years old:

Bilstein B4 dampers - rated as OEM, don't need to declare.
Fresh springs
new ARB bushes and droplinks (meyle HD) or an ARB from a higher spec car.
New engine and transmission mounts all round
The best tyres you can buy

That little lot should get you change out of £1k and will give you a much nicer car to drive. If you do the work yourself it may even give you a new passion for working on cars.

The new twingo is rear drive mid engined.
Lightwright. With a chip you might get near the power you want? Should be one of the cheapest cars to insure for your age at least before mods.

Feel sorry for young petrol heads. I had an rx8 and a (lightly modified) e39 m5 before I was 23 and the most i ever paid for insurance was 1400 a year. This was 10 years ago.

it's a gps device so it doesn't need an odb port, just some 12v inputs.

Depends which company you use. My black box plugs into the obd.

Do you stay in a good area?

Reson I ask is I'm 19 with 3 points for an sp30 and can insure a GT86 for sub 1800 - no telematics.

2L versions of the mk3 mx5 also come in sub 1600.

Any other contributing factors? Career in the motor trade or something like that? Seems strange that I'm no doubt higher risk than you yet you get quoted more than me. Make sure if you use comparison sites that you are putting in an actual reg number for the quotes as opposed to just the make and model.

Ah, ok forgot about that.

Suspension refreshefresh still stands and fit OEM disks if needed with better pads. Surely you don't need to declare upgraded pads do you?

I recently took my e90 318i on a road trip to the peak district (btw snakes pass is <3 <3 <3 when its empty)
The car is great I enjoyed it so much but it became clear that it's too heavy and there are way too many body motions. I did switch to my friends modified cooper s with lowered and firmed suspension, it became clear that the 240bhp was far too much on these roads, I found myself constantly braking.

I later got insurance quotes on the gt86, nc mx-5, porsche boxter and just for bantz a caterham 7.
My e90 318i-£1600
The gt86-£8000, yes that's in thousand
nc mx-5-£6000
boxter-£3000
caterham-£1200, yes that's cheaper than an mx-5

I don't want the boxter because porsche parts are expensive and i don't want the caterham because it rains 364 days a year here.

Can you think of any 140 ish bhp rear wheel drive cars that are cheap to insure for a budget of £10k
1. Probably don't use 'online' compare the market insurance. You'll need to hunt down specialists and smaller firms. And yes, you might even need to use a telephone and have a ring round a few places.

2. Older cars, kits cars, classics cars, left field cars. These are likely going to offer the best insurance.

I admit, it has been a few years since I was 19. But insurance hasn't really changed all that much, nor the trends.

I used to own and run a V12 Jaguar XJ-S which cost less to insure than a friends 1.4 Vauxhall Nova did. At 21 I then moved on to a heavily modified V8 Triumph TR7, which cost about 1/3rd the price to insure than the XJ-S did. Both together however cost less than a mate used to pay for 3rd party cover on a 2.0 Sierra.

I believe a GTM Libra was a rather cost affective mid engine RWD car to insure at one point.

Z3 1.9 with factory hard top and a few minor but pleasing mods i.e. exhaust system with sports cat, cold air induction and remap, Eibach & Bilstien handling package.

You could probably fit an LSD and Bilsteins.

Out of budget these days. A good E30 318is is probably 10k.

I'd consider selling mine for about £6.5k I guess?
