I have a similar short commute across town, I had a e46 330ci for a couple of years which was nice and comfy and made a nice noise, but wasn't really fun around town roads/ roundabouts/ dual carriage.

I recently bought a (mk2? 2009 one) swift sport, I find it 10x more fun/engaging to drive about, it just encourages you to give it some beans and loves to be thrown about a bit, all good fun at 29mph, it sound pretty ok when the revs climb too. I don't actually need a car to get me across country in 20mins, but the feeling of speed when your not going crazily fast is much more usefull smile

granted its a bit tinny and it would be a bit tiresome on an hour long commute in traffic/motorway. but at 7am when there no traffic it gets me to work with a smile on my face (until I remember im have to actually work lol). im getting about 32mpg compared to 19mpg in the bmw, which is the least of my concerns , but still nice.

for £12k I imagine could get a nearly new mk3 model. just try one! I was sold when I chucked it into the first roundabout on my test drive and it sling shot me out the other side lol. wink

A little Swift could be okay, any thoughts on a SEAT Ibiza? I did also consider an A1 Black Edition or S Line, but they are smaller than my Mini. A friend did mention an ST Fiesta?

Again, all good choices. Very different though. I'm not sure if the Swift is as spartan inside as the old Ignis Sport. I borrowed one from a friend and while it was a hoot the build quality was awful. The trim is about as durable as a yogurt pot, the carpets are like fuzzy felt, and it's like driving a biscuit tin. It absolutely flies, but yuo have to want one. I wouldn't want to do 200 miles in one, ever. Fiestas are always a safe choice, but do you wany a safe choice?

To be honest I'd be keeping the Defy for the "better times" and rattling back and forth on the worthless but comfy old commuter that's equipped with mudguards and panniers and currently sitting covered in mud in the garage.

I've just put some air in the tyres of mine, ready for a three mile journey home on Thursday after dropping the car off for a new cambelt.

Be brave and get a bike; with or without an engine. It will save you money and be excellent fun and/or good exercise.

Failing that you could go proper bangernomics.
