Hi which of these engines would I have least trouble with if I had around 3k to spend?

I have heard horror stories regarding every brand brands but never know anyone personally have any issues.

Im not thinking of the twin charged version just the turbo, plus any other suggestions that are similar.

Thanks

Not had any issues yet in 6 years with the 150BHP Fiat T-Jet in a Bravo now on 89k. Gets through a litre of oil every 5k or so now, but never needed topping up when it was younger.

Cheers for the reply mate, are the cars themselves solid?

Stay as far away as possibly from the THP engine. Excessive carbon buildup resulting in a decoke being required every 20k-ish. Timing chain tensioners like to fail and rattle about along with the timing chain. The chain itself slips and causes excessive knock and in some cases destroys the engine.

Nice engine when they work though...

I was wondering why they were so cheap the THPs considering the age and what not.

Tjet's are great engines, just make sure you change the water pump with the timing belt at the required intervals and they shouldn't give you too much trouble.

The 1.4tsi engines st themselves (piston rings/lining goes). Mate had a very mint and well looked after 7 year old Golf with the same engine, 60k miles and it lost compression on one cylinder. Nice!

Thanks for the contributions, the T-jets are sounding good, I like the idea of having a high and low boost option as well.

I only do 60 miles a week and I like the torque in diesels but obviously dont do the mileage so these could be a good alternative.

Am i right in thinking the engine theyre based on has been around forever as well?

I have/am selling a GP T jet- it's a great engine- it has a surprising amount of torque and they do make a nice (ish) noise! Relatively low maintenance.

The t jet is a great engine. It is a pity it is usually coupled to a M32 gearbox, which is a total load of crap.
Make sure you do some research and look out for the gearstick moving in 1st gear when going on and off the power.
Also if you decide on a Bravo, make sure that the climate is working properly, as that is a balls ache to sort as well.

The 118 version is the worst. The lower power ones aren't as bad.

Basically they run far too lean. Tuned versions are better as they tend to run richer.

Find one with a Revo map and it will probably be a bit more reliable. But I still wouldn't bother.

Yeah I was thinking the Bravo, seen a few Alpha Mitos with the same engine in as well, not sure if that'd be a good buy or not.

Couple of bits of flimsy interior trim aside, definitely yes.
