If you're considering an Elise, you can do 2 seats/minimal storage.
Of cars I've owned/driven, I would say Chimaera or Elise for involvement overload. Compared to BMW saloon/coupes anyway, which I have a lot of time for, but are nowhere near as involving. But massively better for real life driving.
The trouble is, involvement is inversely correlated with practicality, IMHO.

If involvement is your main priority the I have to say don't look past the Megane RS has it in spades also a Trophy takes it onto another level all the BMW products would need a trip to ACS/Birds for some suspension work to get them to be involving that's not to say they're bad but they're a bit of a compromise set up.
Also if you don't mind 2 seats the Nissan 370Z is well worthy of consideration.

I picked up a GT86 a few months ago - 2012 with 16,000 miles on it, main dealer purchase and full main dealer service history for just under £14,500 with gloss black wheel refurbishment thrown in before I picked it up too. As a lot of people seem to experience it can take a while to bond with them, but when you do...
That said the straight line performance won't be touching the S3 - but not sure if that's such a bad thing with these new speeding regulations (assuming you're UK based). Also achieves 40mpg on my commute if that's of any interest.
That's my 2p anyway!
