Ultimate reliability and cheap to run for under 10k....
Discussion
I'm really struggling with this one. I wouldn't normally post here but hoping you can help?
Will do circa 15k a year with the odd very long journey. Mostly city work or surrounding suburbs.
Must be:
Comfy
Cheap to run
Reliable
Lots of spec
Safe
Not too keen on diesels, only had two and both have bitten. Would ideally like petrol, hybrid or something like a leaf but am concerned about the range.
Up to 10k but extra points for under that. No older that 2010

Honda Civic? Japanese reliability. Get a 1.8 petrol one with 10k miles and a two year manufacturers warranty and service plan for 10k with a decent spec (cruise Bluetooth premium audio etc). Cheaper for 1.4. Decent mpg for a petrol (more so if you get the 1.4).
Good call, it's already on my shortlist as a LPG car tooFlatToTheMat said:

with change for <stuff>
driving like i had an egg under the pedals, i managed 70mpg on a long motorway run... but that was mind numbing this is PH afterall
engine never gave me any trouble despite having over 200k on it when i bought it.
having over 200k on it... the rest of the car was a pile of st lol.
A Honda Civic or Accord would be my choice. Petrol for the Accord, or petrol or an i-DTEC for the Civic. I wouldn't have an issue buying a 2.2 diesel Honda but keep back the cost of a flywheel replacement. The 1.6 diesel that replaced the 2.2 is very good and doesn't suffer from the DMF issues.

I think the petrol is more reliabile than the diesel. I have a family member with the 2.2 and it had a few problems including 1600 for some sort of clutch job. Though no first hand experience with the petrol.Ford Focus Titanium Navigator (reliable swift motoring) 1.6T

Update:
We drove a 2013 Auris a Hybrid which my wife liked, I found it very Toyotary, which isn't a bad thing it's just hard to get excited about. It's top of the list
I also went to see a Lexus CT200h which is cheaper than the Auris, I think they are a nice looking car with the premium interior I'd like but sadly it's just too small both in the back and the boot so it's out of the running.
My hang up on what to buy is this, it's ideally going to be a 5 year long car, longest we have ever owned a car is 1 year and with the writing on the wall for diesels, will I be able to sell one on 5 years? Otherwise we would most likely buy a 320d or 2.0 tdci Focus.

People will still buy diesels as people that do miles will want one I'm changing my diesel for another one so if that's what you want then get one, the only problem will come if you live in London as of 2020 but you can counter this by getting a 2015 onwards model.
