BMW M135i Insuranace
Discussion
Right, something that gets covered on a daily here but I'm geniuenly shocked with insurance costs and how seriously badly the whole system is managed. I'm nearly 22 years old, 3 years no claims, had a 350z for a year, a couple of RX8's including an R3 and i was lucky enough to bag myself a BMW M135i!! so a 3.5l 350z when i was 19-20 was £1500 for the year insurance with a no fault accident a year before which bumped my insurance by £500 for someone running into the back of me stationary!!! Not bitter - promise... then last year i was in a pile up where the car in front hit the car in front of him and i sadly didn't see him slam on brakes in time for me to stop on the m25 leading me to go into back of him, minimal damage. NO ONE CLAIMED. Insurance quotes before i bought it were around £1700, but for some reason they are now asking £4000 WITHOUT A BLACK BOX FOR NO REASON THAT I CAN CLEARLY SEE. ITS INFURIATING. Does anyone have any tips rather than get rid of the car... that can help, insurance now is just a joke. Im in a well paid job but i cannot see how people afford to drive cars. the premiums are so poorly maintained and are quite frankly a con. ANGRY POST DONE.

You're young and don't have much driving experience. You've been in two collisions in a fairly short amount of time.
You've got an expensive, fast car that people your age have a habit of binning.
You've got an expensive car that people like to nick.
Your premium is £4k for one simple reason... Because insurers think there's a very good chance their hand is going to be in their pocket before the year's out.

but where do you get a number that's 1/3 of the value of the car
Because if you do something silly, their hand won't be in their pocket JUST for the value of your car, will it?Beginning to wonder is there is some scam going on. Tin foil hats at the ready....
Ive seen a few posts now and have experienced it myself where people get quotes online for a car they are looking to buy and the quote is good/reasonable, then comes the time to purchase/lease the car then low and behold the premium has gone up massively! I had this with a golf R, luckily I did another quote just before pulling the trigger on a lease deal and my quote had doubled to £550 odd.

Just to put this into some sort of context...
You are driving a rear wheel drive hot hatch with circa 320bhp at 22 years old and are complaining that your insurance is a tad expensive?
when I was 22 I was driving a 10 year old 105bhp ford Orion with 4 years no claims and was paying almost £1000 back then!!!!
Im now paying almost £500 on my M235I now and that with 17 years NCB.
How much do you think you should be paying?

Insurance is a LOT more expensive if you get a quote on the day you want the policy to start. It just is. If you've had the quote from before, it should still be honoured as long as it's within a month or so. If you find you need it on the day, then start the policy, go home, get a quote for a week's time, tell them you want that, then once it starts cancel the expensive one within the 14 days you have by law after the paperwork arrives. They can only charge you pro-rata for the actual cover within that 14 days, but can charge you for any other services, such as finance.STe_rsv4 said:

Likewise, at 21 I was driving a BMW E30 318i with a mere 113bhp, with 3 years NCB and a fully clean licence, and was was paying £1,300 after much haggling and also having completed my 'Pass-plus'.You are driving a rear wheel drive hot hatch with circa 320bhp at 22 years old and are complaining that your insurance is a tad expensive?

I badly wanted a Sierra Cosworth at the time, but I didn't get one because the cheapest insurance quote I could get was the wrong side of £3,500!
This was almost 12 years ago. £4,000 now for an M135i at 21 years old (with that insurance history) sounds pretty much spot on, and suggests that premiums haven't changed an awful lot over the last 10 years.
ETA: in fact I'd say the insurance cost for a Sierra Cosworth in 2005 is a pretty decent comparison to the M135i in 2017 in terms of RWD/performance/desirability to thieves etc!

Inflation alone would put that 2005 £3,500 to £5k.This was almost 12 years ago. £4,000 now for an M135i at 21 years old (with that insurance history) sounds pretty much spot on, and suggests that premiums haven't changed an awful lot over the last 10 years.

The £4k looks even better value!
