Im coming under pressure from the wife to get a cheaper car to run than my vw golf mk5 gti. I would have approx 5k to spend on a replacement, but i am struggling to find something that meets my requirements that isn't totally abysmal.

Requirements:
Tax lower than 220 a year (currently 285)
Ideally 5 doors
Hatch preferably but estates and coupes considered
Low bork risk - starting a family so 2k engine rebuilds a no go!
Petrol
Ideally 30mpg plus
Good handling (much more important to me than performance)
Hopefully decent performance.

The only car i have found so far that i liked was the BMW 1 series 118i or 120i (mk1) but apparently there are known timing chain issues on these.

Thanks

Tom

The Golf already meets your requirements, with the exception of tax confused

How much are you paying for insurance?

What about a mk5 golf gti?

Even if you did buy something that was slightly cheaper to run, better the devil you know?

We pay 110 a month insurance for two cars but golf is high insurance group so thought there could be scope to bring it down. There will be some big bills coming in the next year (cambelt, cam follower) but could be worth paying.
I am not keen to sell but other half is, hence tentative looking.

Unless you go for a really crappy economy car then you will be hard pressed to find something much cheaper to run.

Top Tip: Don't listen to Women that know nothing about cars.

Or just buy a 1.0 fiesta.

Just a general comment, but - this statement is ilogical! Spending £5k to save a few hundred pounds on running costs isn't really saving money if that is the object of the exercise. I'll leave suggestions for a newer car to the expert ZX10R NIN who always provides useful recommendations.

I think you misunderstand me - the 5k would come from the sale of the gti. So i would theoretically be saving money. For example, the bmw 1 series 118i - £135 road tax, 40mpg, much lower insurance group compared to £285 road tax, 28-30mpg and pretty high insurance group.

I take people's views on board - i am only considering it at this stage, and I'm not definitely selling, just wandering if there are any cars i hadnt thought of that could be a suitable replacement (e.g 1 series).

So depending on your mileage you are hoping to save £500 -£1000 per year?

Ah, ok, that is more sensible. Would something like an auto petro Lexus IS250 be on the radar. That's one I've had and not quite all your requirements (tax is about £300 I think) reliability is up there!

Better the devil you know.

I tried this a few years ago and it ended up costing me way more than the original car.

Keep the GTI.

Here's the thing your Golf will have a good chunk of torque from low down in the rev range which is a big help when it comes to fuel economy as the N/A engines have to be worked harder to get the go you might look for on occasion.

TBH you'd be better off keeping the car & maintain it especially as you're not adding to the budget so you might get something sensible & still end up with a substantial bill.

You could get something sensible like this but apart from the road tax will you be any better off.

As a sidebar I always find it interesting when people don't want to carry out maintenance work on their cars (I'm not having a go at you OP I'm generalising I'm sure you'd be happy to but for the nagging) so they move them on but when looking for the new car come on here & complain about the number of cars they've seen that need work or the maintenance schedule hasn't been followed.

Hell no, is250 is £500.

Also OP> does your wife just want a new car and had enough of the Golf, *stereotype alert* do her friends have newer cars.

The logic that you need a new car because you want to save £60 a year on tax is ludicrous to me but hey ho we all have our reasons for wanting a change.

How about getting a Golf mk6 1.4 TSI - they are not a million miles away from mk5 Golf performance , they do 0-60 in 8 seconds, average 40mpg and the tax is £150

I don't see the point in trying get something cheaper to tax, you are trying to save £65 per year and even if you keep it for 10 years its only £665 saving. The cam follower you can do on your drive and its about £50 in parts. Unless you buy new then you are likey to have a big service, brakes, cambelt to deal with anyway.

Ok, the one that you want to own is £500 and you still pay more than a GTI to have the auto.

Well Honda Civic type R's and Renault Megane R26's could suit your needs but they are 3 door only frown

Maybe a Ford Focus ST?
Mazda 3 MPS?
Skoda Octavia VRS?
Vauxhall Insignia 2.8 V6 turbo (though not sure how well these fair)

The question is...

... what does the missus drive?

Have you suggested to her that she could swap her car for something like a late '90s 1.0 3-cylinder Corsa if money needs to be saved? wink

Just say your going to look at smaller engined golfs and then debadge your GTI, detail it and put a smaller engine badge on it before you come home.

Yep, keep the golf. You can't have anything better for 5k. You have the same requirements as me and it meets them all. Plus it puts up with total abuse.
