In my case: 8'x4' sheets of plywood, 6m long 8x2, my 4 man canoe.... start eating those shredded wheat !
I find it easy to load my bike onto the car's roof carrier, and remove it at destination. However, after a 4 hour hard ride, it becomes much harder to put it back on! Last thing I would want to do it mess about with a Hop-On stool.
So can see the advantages for extended trips, but not for day trips.

As always it does depend what you need. However, after a 4 hour hard ride, it becomes much harder to put it back on! Last thing I would want to do it mess about with a Hop-On stool.

I can get 6 people and 6 bikes inside my LWB T4
I did consider MPVs but if I can't get 8x4 sheets inside, it's no use to me.
Well just to tie this thread up I have bought a nice 56 plate transit with low (107k) millage as well as a lovely Z4 roadster with the 3.0 engine. Might not be exactly the motorway cruiser I was planning but the wife is happy and I have to say that the straight 6 makes a lovely noise - roll on a few more sunny days!
