Mark 1 Skoda Octavia VRS. Turbo petrol as you ask. Easily and cheaply re-mapped to 225 bhp.

First-gen Seat Leon Cupra - mechanically the same as the Skoda Octavia.

Six-cylinder BMW E46 if you prefer to be driven from the rear!

Saab 9-5 Aero HOT manual - 2.3 turbo. They are out there for £500-1000. Although they can be ropey in that price range. £2000 should get a decent one - 250 BHP, 0-60 in 6.8 seconds and impressive midrange acceleration.

Although be prepared to fix niggling issues, and there are better cars for A/B road blasts. Although with refreshed suspension they still handle well enough, but weren't really built for that reason.

You wont get a st150 and tune it to 200bhp for anywhere near 2 grand, 5/6 grand maybe but you would be buying a ropey example

Toyota Celica VVTL-I, Honda Civic Type R (EP3) or Mini Cooper S.
Plenty around under 2K so buy on condition and history.

Boxter.

2k to buy, probably more again to maintain but thought I'd throw it in as I couldn't believe I see some on autotrader for under a grand. Mass produced Porsche!

Impreza Turbo.

Even the weakest Impreza turbo made 215bhp but with a few simple mods 250-270bhp is achievable and then with a reasonable cost 330bhp is easily achievable, above that it gets a lot more expensive if you want to do it properly.

I would go for an ep3 at that money. However, an impreza would be a better fit for you by the sounds of it, as power can be had much more easily than a civic.

My other half has an older 225 and it's ok. I always find the power delivery quite odd and slightly underwhelming. It's a nice car though but feels dead to drive, it's very competent but provides very little feedback.

The Impreza classic on the other hand with a stiffened rear anti-roll bar and over 300bhp feels like an animal.

If you're looking for a quick 3 door with tuning potential; I'd stay with something from VAG. Audi A3 1.8T, Seat ibiza Cupra 1.8T, VW Golf GTI Turbo. Those could be found just in budget and give good gains when tuning.

What makes you really want a CTR?

The 1.8t engine is tuneable, the only disappointing thing is it sounds terrible.

I owned a CTR for years and that whilst someone can be found lacking (out of VTEC) sounds utterly brilliant with a CAI and decent exhaust.

That is the main issue with turbo 4 pots; they can deliver the performance but can sound underwhelming.

I had a CTR years ago which I sold to a family member. They fitted a CAI, DC5 manifolds and cams if I remember rightly, TODA exhaust and a Hondata ECU. I think it managed around 230-240 BHP on the dyno. I was lucky enough to drive it and have to admit, I've never heard such an incredible soundtrack - really raw but deafening as it headed towards 8700 RPM.

Why not get an ST170 it's already closer to 200bhp & can be easily tuned to 200+bhp
