Did something similar a few years back although mainly B roads and dual carriageway rather than motorway.

My experience was auto - most definitely auto, coupled with nice toys.

My last 2 daily drivers have been a Q7 (supremely comfortable, very good level of kit and most importantly, something completely different to my fun car (this bit was key) so that i never felt I was missing out if the sun was shining and the road was empty.

Before that was a BMW 645 convertible which was epic (apart from MPG) , fast, comfortable, active cruise and heads up display I still miss today and made it a very good commuting car. The optional dynamic chassis meant it could be hustled very well on the B roads as well as eat up the motorways.

For me, although it's a personal choice, a hot hatch such as a Mini would be the last car I would choose to do a motorway and city centre commute in as it's not the most comfortable and it's not a world away from the Porsche so would it actually serve a purpose?

I think it's difficult to get something that is fun and comfortable...because they just don't go together for me.

I've had both an E90 330d and 330i and both were great cruisers/comfortable but never in anyway fun, whereas now I have a Mini Cooper S and it's great fun but it's not very comfortable.

Used to have a polo Sdi for a commute, was satisfying to see 60mpg. Not too bad a car either.

Some great suggestion guys - thanks!

Of the priorities, fun is way below comfort and economy! As has been said, there's only so much fun you can have on a motorway run or stuck in traffic. The more I think about it, an Auto is a must!

I had the Scirocco R before the Cayman, so would like something different.

My shortlist for cars to check out in person and test drive (very varied but hey you gotta start somewhere!):
e90 Auto Coupe
CLS
Mini Cooper S/SD

I can recommend this car as I have one, they're very comfortable (if you get a sport model with the orthopedic seats you really won#t go wrong) economical & a smart place to be.

Either engine will give you good economy mid 40's for the 3.0d high 40's for the 2.0d, the only thing that you might want to update is the stereo so that you have DAB/streaming etc.

Drop all the windows open the sunroof & you're in a very nice place despite sitting in traffic.

Or try & keep an eye out for one of these:

Avantgarde Sport they're very rare but they come with the orthopedic seats but not the AMG bodykit & stiffer suspension setup of the sport.
