If you want to talk about the actual car, (or want advice on what else you could buy,) you're in the right place.
For everything else, talk to your wife and parents.

I wouldn't buy it. Horrendous depreciation and a boring steer. Each to their own I guess.
You sound just like his parents! biglaugh

I'd agree, after being stuck with an Audi A4 for 2 years. Great value lease deal but a very boring and forgettable car.

However, we're all different. I know people my age, so around 26, just like the OP, who love their big barges and aren't interested in hot-hatches and etc.

We're all different, is the point i'm getting at. OP, i'd just buy it if i were you. Life's too short. Seems like you can afford it so sod what everyone else thinks.

I am. These issues are commonplace in my house. I'm 38.

this is why me and the missus agreed that we wouldn't interfere too much in our car descisions.

We do our own thing, so currently I am leasing a golf r (good family car etc) she bought outright in cash a pug 2008 back in 2014.

I'm not a huge fan of the pug 2008, it doesn't excite me in any way but she loves it and I get a quiet life.

For the golf, we had a look at one, just so she knew what I was getting, but again, its used as the family car and for trips longer than a hour or so.

The pug 2008 is the urban runaround or if my missus is going by herself somewhere. Its done about 25k miles in 4 years.

I would never buy my wife a car, we put in a amount into the joint account for house stuff, but what she does with her spare cash is up to her, what I do with mine is up to me (to a point).

OP, when I was your age I had a 2 year old V8 barge, but I also had a 1960s Daimler, a dented, 10 year old 205 GTI and a new leased van for my business. For my purposes, the only really cost effective one was the leased van because I could offset 100% of its costs against tax - so it was effectively a free new vehicle, but all the rest of my fleet were mine (paid for).

The depreciation on the newish barge was absurd and I only drove it about 3000 miles in the year, but I loved it...nearly as much as the dented and thrashed 205GTI and the almost as much as the slow and thirsty MK2 Daimler V8.

I think you'll be paying about £35000 for your A7 and I probably had almost the same amount tied up in today's money and in the end, I resented not having the cash. I sold my barge and Daimler and stayed with the bangernomic policy for years, but I also bought a large Kawasaki!

I never regretted owning the nice cars and I've had some lovely cars since, but I lost half of what I paid for the V8 barge in just over a year. If you keep the the A7 for 2 or 3 years, you will lose about the same. Many executive barges are financed in tax-effective ways - will yours? ...or will your ownership of your lovely exec car be worth £20,000+ to you?

If I had fallen in lust with an A7 (not happening any time soon!) I'd do as suggested above, I'd buy an older one to avoid the depreciation. A friend of mine is a barge fan. He bought a spotless, very fast V8 Merc coupe with only 22000miles for just under 1/5 of the new price. Now that it has a vanity plate, only the learned know that it's about 7 years old...who cares? - It's a lovely car and he paid less than you are proposing to lose in the next three years.

You too could pretend to be a drug dealer for £5000! (6m of A7 depreciation)

Good luck with the decision process - it's stressful!

I wouldn't care what your parents think but I do think a financial decision of that magnitude should be taken with the full support of your wife.

That's nice.

I do generally waste my time asking the opinion of random people based on false information.

If you haven't got something constructive to say mate.. do one.

I wanted people's opinion.. not judgment mate.

It's not a case of standing up to my Mrs it's a case of do people agree that I'm making a mistake on the car. I find it so interesting how quickly people on the internet go personal.

Thank you for your invaluable input on my thread. You have been incredibly helpful.

Opinion.... why at 26 do you want to buy a boring middle management mobile, go and buy something more interesting instead.

If that were the case why bother even mentioning the situation with your family?

Because it's part of the story. The three people closest to me disagreed with my car purchase. Wanted other opinions.

Opinions here seem to be - why would you want to spend good money on a heavily depreciating, white goods repmobile when you could have something nice? RS3 was a good suggestion.

I have read the thread but can't see the reason WHY they think it is a silly purchase? The car itself? The money side?

So OP, how much would the car cost as a % of your annual salary? I'm sure you will get some answers to that!

But there is no right answer to this. You just need to decide how important it is to you.

Seema a pointless question. The OP could have a million quid in his account and earn 50p per year. Not everyones finances are counted by what they can pay on a monthly or annual basis, everyones situation is different.

You mean your and a few other opinions.

My opinion is that if OP wants it he should go for it.

But I wouldn't say that was the general opinion just because I think it.

What's your view on whether or not the OP should go against his family's wishes ( as opposed to going against what you think) ?

Some people just like big cruisers. I don't personally see the issue. Let him buy what he wants. We don't all lust after the same cars and soley hot-hatches alike. I'm very surprised that people are struggling with this notion.
