My parents didn’t support my first car purchase, didn’t want me to have my own car at all at age 18. They went away on holiday for a week and I decided to buy my first car, a nice well spec’d Ford Focus that was 7 months old. Got a train down to a Birmingham, purchased in cash and I paid the insurance, bit of a moan from them but soon forgotten.

My second car was when I was living in London several years later, lovely Volvo S60. Parents again thought it was mad, asking why one needs a car in London. Took it home at Christmas and after they drove it, never another complaint.

It was only my most recent purchase, a nice Audi A4, that I got a positive response before they’d seen it or indeed before I’d actually bought it - recognising that now I was driving 18-20k miles a year, driving something I liked kind of mattered and it made sense to move on my S60 before it hit 100k miles.

So in short - ignore the parents. They’ll soon get over it. Wife however is another matter!
