Hi all,

Not sure if the below questions have been asked (I have tried to look for info in the forums but didnt find anything specific to my questions)
I am in the market for a nearly new Audi S5 2017 (either a Sportback or Coupe, under 40k) which will be decided over the next few days post a test drive over the weekend. As this will be my first "expensive" car purchase I have a few questions if people wouldnt mind helping me with.

1) Financing of car - Happy to buy the car without right cash with no finance, but seeing 40k leave the bank will be sad! Therefore, I have had a look at personal loans and I have seen two that seem pretty good.
Santander (20k, 3 years, 3.4% APR, total cost 21,061 with early repayment options) Works out to be 20k loan, 18k self funded, monthly repayments of 585 TSB (25k, 3 years, 2.91%, total cost 26,136 with early repayment options) Works out to be 25k loan, 13k self funded, monthly repayments 726.
Do the above make sense vs a dealer finance option / lease / PCP etc? When I go in for a test drive, I will see what options they have, but I doubt they will trump the above and the fact there will be no mileage caps, worries about damage etc.

2) PX on old car - I have a '08 Mini - Guessing i'll get around 3 to 3.5k for this - When should I inform the dealer that I want to PX my old car in order to obtain the best price on the S5 itself.

3) Talking to the dealer - I take that if I am talking no finance option with the dealership, they will unlikely get a kick back from that and potentially unwilling to move on the price of the car - Whats the best way to handle this?
1 - Go in with an "open mind" on a finance option to get the best price on the new car, then request the PX and then tell them I'm paying for the car outright?
2 - Be upfront (ie, make them fully aware of PX and cash deal)
3 - Other options?

3) Any other handy tips that I should know of before I go in and make a fool of myself smile

Appreciate the feedback all!

Agree to the finance, bare with me here, you take the finance to secure the best deal for your S5 then bring the PX into the deal & finally on the 7th month of having the finance you clear it (alway establish that there's no penalty for early termination of the finance) which leaves you having struck the best deal possible.

1. Buy new. Discounts can get you to same price as nearly new
2. Buy new to secure low interest rates
3. Buy new to secure Audi finance contribution
4. Settle finance as quick as possible. Finance can be settled anything from 1st month

Interesting views. I never thought about settling the finance within months - I will find out about this when I go in on Sunday.

ZX10R NIN - interesting you say within 7 months. Why 7? Is there a minimum period?

VAGLover - I did think of buying new, but it's still another 5k in terms of cost (via drivethedeal and carwow ). I started with a budget of 25k and it has since crept up, but might do this for the next car. Again I will enquire the best price for a new car and see what they can do

What about with new 18 plates coming out in March. Should I expect or request a reduction in the price of the car I am looking for? If so, how much should I try to barging for?

Thanks all so far!

Normally most finance agreements have a minimum stipulation of 6 months, hence the reason for clearing it on the 7 month.

If they don't give you a nice enough difference tell them you'll collect it when the 18 plate comes out & you should lever more out of them.

I think the period you're referring to may be how long the product runs to ensure the commission is payable? All the finance agreements I've used have settled within this and usually cancelled in the 14 day cooling off period.

It can be a very good tactic to use finance to drive the best deal on a car and then settle/ back out accordingly using your preferred method of acquisition.

Have you tried Orange Wheels? I was also looking for a nearly new car but I’ve just bought a new VW (so might also have Audi deals) via them and they were circa 2k cheaper than DTD and Car Wow. At the price they quoted it didn’t make sense to go nearly new.

Good luck.

I currently have a 2017 sportback on lease as my daily driver. I've had it just under a year and have another year left to run, so only yesterday I was clicking through AutoTrader to see how much you use one would be...... I'm always looking to see how much my potential next car would be even if it's not due to change yet.

My one piece of advice if you are looking for a used one would be to open your field of view and consider driving halfway across the country to get the right car. I'm still amazed that people will only go to their local dealer and then pay whatever the dealer is asking rather than travelling further afield when there are substantial savings from one dealer to another.

The ones I will looking at where the convertible version of the new 2017 S5 and was staggered at some of the differences.
For example cheapest I found advertised in the country at a main dealer was £36,600, this being a 17 plated white car with what I believe to be standard specification and 5000 miles. In comparison to 1 of the dealers much nearer to me with the same age car, same colour but 4000 miles and fitted with a couple of extras but asking £44,900.

Just for comment, standard specification is a very high specification, I only ordered virtual cockpit and privacy glass with mine and I genuinely don't think you would need any other extras. having said that, it had the choice the upgraded sound system would be a lovely thing to have but wouldn't pay too much extra for it as standard sounded very good.

Thanks all for the input so far!

I will ask about the finance deals and how quickly I can be allowed to clear the finance. I'll also bring home the T&C's as I guess they will say anything to sell the car + finance.

OrangeWheels does seem slightly cheaper but given I'm already 10k past my initial budget, I'm happy to hold tight for now.

With regards to location, I agree, I won't like limited to my local branch. They stated they can bring any car in from their group (in this case Jardine) so fingers crossed if I see a cheap car up in Edinburgh, there should be no issue with a nearly new car (ie no "real" need to see the car) and I'll have them bring it in subject to my final approval of seeing the physical car at my local dealership.

That's interesting that the standard kit is good enough but I'll have a play around with all the optional extras. Remember I'm coming from a mini with zero extras so everything's going to be a bonus!

Thanks guys and I'll let you know how I get on tomorrow !

Well the viewing didn't occur and audi called to cancel saying the car hasn't returned from a service (?)

Guess I'll have to reschedule and wait. Fingers crossed it happens this weekend.

Right so had the test drive of an S5 coupe and my days the power, the ride, the comfort, couldn't ask for more (well I could but the RS5 is out of the question!)
Finished the test drive, got back into the showroom and we talked numbers. Not sure if I did anything wrong but I played dumb and said what options are available.
He only really talked about PCP options and asked our monthly max (said £500). He then talked about the optional extras, such as gap insurance, smart cover (dents etc) alloy cover, tire cover, paint work and a few other things.
With all of their optional extras on the best he could do on the total cost of the car was a big fat nothing. He goes if you go down the finance route the best they can do is a £500 dealership contribution towards the deposit.
With regards to a px on the old mini, pretty much wasn't interested at all and told me to go to webuyanycar
Now I've found the car I want to go for (list price is 38,000) what should I do? Should I continue to push for a drop in price or change tack and ask for additional freebies such as better mats and a bunch of cleaning stuff?
Really thought I'd be able to get a few k off a nearly new car, but looks lime I was wrong.
Ideas in next steps? Interest to hear people view.

This now you know you like the car & the specification you want contact carwow drive the deal & you'll probably find a better deal take out the finance then clear it once you clear their minimum time period.

Very true, but this will push the total cost of the car up (probably not the monthly payments) if I go via carwow or dtd.

The biggest issue is that I started with a budget of 30k and has slowly crept up to 40k and really can't justify anymore on a car thats primary use is to go the station and then look decent at functions / events!

I think next steps well probably be try to get freebies thrown in.

Are there any option extras that they are trying to flog me (tire, paint, alloys etc) that are actually worth going for?

Thanks so far

No, no and no, unless you can get them for free (properly free, not added to finance, mind).

All these things can be purchased privately for far less, if you feel the need.

Why?

Due to the internet the country is a very small place now, a used car has to be priced competitively in the first place otherwise there would be no interest in it, therefore if it is priced correctly, relative to other similar cars, there is no need to suddenly start knocking off £thousands, there probably isn't even "a few k" margin in it to start off with.

If the car is priced well then you have no where to go I'm afraid unless you can secure a new one for similar money through one of the internet sites such as CarWow or Drive the Deal.

Good point that it can be purchased separately at a cheaper price - will look into company's that can offer this. Any recommendations?

Wrt saving a few k, never purchased a nearly new car that costs a significant amount. It's my first time and hence the questions and guidance - I agree the Internet has remove a number of boundaries and increased competition, but I thought there would still be something that the dealer could do.

Hmm I think I'm happy to go up to 38 - 3 (sale of mini) so 35k total isn't too bad, tbh I'm happy with the audi.
The list of cars sent over are tempting but s5 to me seem pretty rare vs the others like bmw so I like that idea too...
Could be me and I could be wrong
I found car2cover and it seems like it's the underlying company that audi use to sell their insurance items. Anyone able to confirm?

Does the one you're looking at have the Virtual Cockpit?
