Manual ?? mmmm not sure on that. I would want an auto, and a turbo. I will never buy another manual again now, autos are the ay forward. I mean, how you meant to text and grope your mrs as you drive along ? :-) ( Joke... before I get all the do gooders )

No half measures here. Go balls to the wall or go home.

Have you sniffed out a few Porsche 4x4 forums yet and did some searching on ` buyers guide` or ` common faults` ? This is a must. I know there are well known engines issues, and how to spot them. I would definitely read up and go and see a few, having drive and get a vibe. I only paid £4K for my 55' which is throw away money. £10 large coins is chunky and you could buy one of these, drive it a month, engine needs replacing which could then write this off / loose 9k.

Ive seen many at 100K now, so Im assuming some big engine service or maintenance happens around 100K ? Or a well know issues starts to pop up.

All this talk, Im looking myself now, might bag a test drive and still how they go like :-) Ive seen a few with some impressive body kit on it. Looks mean.

You've got me interested now :-)

So, done some research. Seems that the 2006 > v8's had cylinder scoring issues, so avoid. 3.2 engines are okay but okay performance isnt what we want here ! :-)

Some garage reckon avoiding the v8's until 2007/8, but there seems to be a general agreement that 2006 4.5 S turbo is the way forward but need to be mindful of several issues :

Plastic coolant pipes under the inlet, there is a fix, these are replaced with metal ones. £1K.
Drive shaft replacement - Bearings have issues
Gearbox value bodies can need replacing - £1600. Kick down should be smooth but if its a ... bang.... then avoid.
Coil packs go, but that is common on all big v8s
Satnavs a re rubbish
CD player seems to fail a lot.
Need to check every button / electrical function
Check for tyre wear, if uneven then suspension issues. Big heavy cars.

Try to get one that has air suspension as these ride better, but compressors can go.

Seems 2006 < Turbos are where to look at. About £12k should get you a 80/90K turbo model. Seems that owners love them.

my take on it is that ALL of the cars mentioned are going to kick you on the balls - hard. Once you accept that then it's just a case of deciding which looks you can live with and which is likely to empty your wallet faster.

Personally I do like the RRS (then again I do live in Essex hehe)

If you're going to stretch the budget there is another performance SUV that becomes an option:

Grand Cherokee SRT8

I looked into the SRT8 4x4s. During my v8 itch journey I noticed that 2 SRT examples for sale had both had engine rebuilds, and one had a gearbox rebuild. I sniffed around the SRT8 forums and yes they suffer engine problems, no different than the rest of the fast v8 world, but there is another issue that due to the low model numbers parts / knowledge / and trustworthy garages were extremely difficult to find and parts had to be shipped in from the US. Just made life even harder.

I test drove one too, the interior looks good in pics but the chrome is all plastic and the console panel fit was awful, really cheap / poor. Didn't have the Mercedes or BMW quality feel. Personally, that is too much of a time bomb for me.

yes and no... ANY problem that you are likely to experience over here has already occurred to someone in the USA so there is no shortage of knowledge in what/how to do. Parts, even ordered from the US, for Yank mobiles are still cheaper (and quite possible arrive faster) than anything for your Eurochariot

I agree to the knowledge part as I am a member of the US ML AMG group. You're right they have a ton of knowledge and can advise on everything, but unless you are good with the spanners to do the work yourself, ehich I've had to do on my truck, when you do need to go to a garage then you still have an additional ball ache.

Again with parts, yes you can order from the US, again I have done this, but its still an added layer of potential issues. Wrong part, import tax, etc. I try to source parts from eBay ( breaking ) or local scrapyards too. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it needs to be considered as it will add more difficulty. This is what put me off a F150 supercharged truck. I had a LHD + V8 itch !!!! :-), but again getting parts was difficult back then, plus the drive on it was awful. And the build quality...... Jesus H Christ !!!!

I also owned a Mitsubishi Pajero Evolution for a few years, and although this was JDM and Ralliart could help sourcing parts, parts was painful. I had a gearbox issue that was becoming more and more obviously and I couldn't find a gearbox specialist to consider it. So I had to sell it, which wasn't too much of a loss. That 4x4 was a letdown. 280bhp but felt so slow. Looked the part but just didn't perform.

totally O/T don't let the spares situation put you off a Ford Lightning - I've owned 2 now and they are phenominal. Maybe I was lucky but I didn't have any issues with them reliability-wise (they never met a petrol station they didn't like, but that's another tale entirely!). I do agree that fit and finish is somewhat lacking but I wasn't bothered in all honesty - that huffer on a V8 cloud9

The SRT8's are a good car there really aren't that many issues, yes the interior isn't up to Porsche standards but they're a fun car real world 12mpg around town & a killer engine note.

Any decent yank specialist & parts sourcing will be fine.

Every time that car is mentioned I mentally kick myself for selling mine. The low steering ratio is/was the only thing I criticised, making a rapid roundabout left-right into a wheel twiddling pain. Great car.
