Peugeot 306 GTI-6 prices

Bit of a thread resurrection, but i need to give some serious thought with regards to what to do with my GTI-6

I've had a bit of a shuffle round, so there is space in my new garage/workshop for it to live in there. It's dry, clean and tidy, etc. The 306 has spent about 3 yrs living in my old wooden garage looking sorry for itself.

So last weekend when it was finally in the workshop i could get it on the lift and have a really good look at it, and was kind of overwhelmed by the amount of work i think it'll need to bring it back to a really good standard. Everything underneath and in the engine bay just looks so tired.

The interior is as it was before - very, very tidy. And it drives just fine (on my driveway at least). It had a new clutch, throttle cable and gear linkages when i got it so that bit is sorted at least. But the new brakes i fitted when i got it now look crusty. It also had new tyres and thankfully they still look good.

So the question is, what to do with it now?

Part of me thinks just sell it as a project for someone else to devote time and energy to. It's only on 80k miles after all.

Or are these about to go into orbit price-wise? And even if they did, would a blaze yellow one (seemingly the least liked colour), needing a good cosmetic going over, be worth much?

I'd appreciate any thoughts on this. Keep? Keep and spend on it? Sell?

Keep it and do small jobs every so often. When you say the brakes look "crusty" what do you mean, exactly? Surface corrosion?

I would say keep it but it needs to be in use or will end up being scrap if too long unused (shame for that to happen).

Value wise it’s going to be a while before they are worth much but expect one day it will and that colour was always unpopular ( I had half a dozen GTi-6 and my S plate in Blaze and took ages to sell due to the colour ) so will limit the value somewhat - great cars as they are, the value is not going up yet - too fresh in people minds still?

Would make a good track car, strong mechanicals and scruffy cosmetics works well for track use.

Blaze yellow aka “Early morning pi$$”

I’ve a bit of an attachment to 306s, I’ve owned 4 including a GTi-6, cabriolet and a diesel over the years. I think the problem with them is that the base car was designed back in what, 1993 if memory serves? The dashboard and instrument layout didn’t change right up until production stopped in 2002 (when all they really made were a handful of diesels it seems, and some late-registered police panda cars)

Thing is they need a lot of love, which was fine when your average owner accepted little weekend jobs like changing drop links or fixing an electrical gremlin (much blood has been spilled replacing brake light sensors!) nowadays people don’t really want to be doing that (or perhaps aren’t as capable?) and certainly a tired hot hatch which has long had its day doesn’t justify it, they’re not exactly easy to fix.

Rear beams fail, requiring refurbishment and new bearings / bushes
Rear callipers are crap and always siezing
GTi6 engines live in constant fear of snapping a belt and becoming a paperweight, even on an expensive resuscitation they can become a dreaded “tapper”

Then there’s the electrics
Interiors wore badly

Loved all of mine but don’t think I’d have the time or inclination to do it again now. Especially when the aforementioned EP3 did everything just as well but was better built and more reliable. I’m not saying faster as this was always causing great debate on the GTi6 forums!!

Only you can decide this, I had a similar debate over a 205GTi 4 years ago and we sold it.... wish we'd waited a year or two!

If you decide to sell in the next 12 months, I'd be interested in hearing from you as I have often considered buying one of these. I love these cars. Best hot hatch I ever drove was the 306 Rallye...shouldve bought one when they were cheap.
