Audi TT-RS vs SLK55 AMG
Discussion
my SLK55 is for sale and, though I say it myself, it does sound immense (as change from the usual silver it's mystic blue). Had 3 months commuting in it and loved it - sunshine roof down and airscarf on; monsoon conditions - roof up and heated seats. It's not a delicate machine but a real bruiser (think muscle car)
I've had a SLK55 for 5 years, and (I, and passengers) love it. The sense of occasion, and sheer noise are awesome.
In terms of running costs, it has cost me nothing other than routine servicing at an Independent Merc specialist, except a coil spring and a headlight ballast unit.
Apart from the other considerations already mentioned is storage space. I think you can fold the seats down in a TT to shift bikes, golf clubs, etc. The boot in the SLK is bigger than most direct competitors, but limited in this respect.
One of the reasons that I still own it is unsure of what to change to. AMG GT would be nice but I would miss the hard top roadster format. Most of the other hard top roadsters would feel like a downwards step.
One of the latest R172 is an option (mine's a 2010 R171), but the TTRS will definitely be on the test drive list, so watching this thread with interest.

Having owned three AMGs of various types there is one thing i can say - you will NEVER tire of that thunderous noise coming out of the back when you step on the loud pedal. The TTRS is faster, more tuneable and better in the wet but for that smile factor its got to be AMG all the way.

5 posts in nearly 100 months i'd say he's pretty serious about the above statement!GTID said:
The noise of the 5 cylinder may not be as thunderous as the V8 but my word with the sports exhaust it does a decent impression of a screaming V10 above 5k rpm. Stage 1 remaps turn them into seriously fast cars if that's your thing.
How often can you get above 5k revs on the roads these days?irocfan said:

So OP have you booked in any test drives.
Not yet, but this will be the deciding vote as it's getting tough to choose between the two.On paper, the TT-RS does seem to tick the boxes for the daily great engine, 4 wheel drive, great gearbox (s-tronic), and a little less thirsty.
But it's hard not to become smitten when you hear that roaring V8 in the Merc!
I've been listening to both all week:

I expect both of these to be little torque monsters.

When the test drives happen, I'll also be looking out for how they pull in the lower revs to simulate real life commuting.

The SLK has great pull but make sure you put it in sports mode as if you leave it in C it'll pull away in 2nd, on a run they never feel lacking the change will be slower than the TT but it's not a bad thing & adds to the drama, the RS shifts are very fast which makes it feel relentless.I owned a N/A M3 before, wonderful machine especially when you let it sing towards 7k.... but it was a pig to move in traffic.

The 55 is fast & as it slots home another gear it just pulls again (you can make the shift faster, I did & I'm very happy with the results) the exhaust note is tame in standard form but a secondary cat delete & Xpipe bring the car to life also Mercedes don't sound great just revving, they produce their best notes under load.
On that note watch this clip:

As the owner of a number of CLK 55's if there are any questions you may have then feel free to ask.
