Buying a diesel Octavia VRS for short commute
Discussion
Hi guys,
I am looking at buying a 2014 diesel octavia VRS as they are much cheaper than the petrol engine ones.. about a 4k saving or more.
My daily commute is 2 miles each way. I will more than likely be taking it out on weekends for longer distances but cant always count on that happening.
Will I have poor mpg with such a small commute and will I have DPF problems?
Any advice would be great.
Cheers
John

Never mind a diesel, a bike would be better for that commute!
and yes, you'll fk your dpf and you'll get poor mpg as it will never warm up
Even a good run at the weekend will return poor MPG depending on how far you drive as once the engine is all up to temperature it will need to regen the DPFand yes, you'll fk your dpf and you'll get poor mpg as it will never warm up
I have a diesel octavia vrs - drive it 6-10 miles to work (depending on route). Averages about 48mpg. I'm not worried about the dpf. It does enough runs of 30+ mins on evenings / weekends, and I'll do 12-15k miles per year.
I don't think I'd be so keen on something "quick" for such a short journey if you do so little other driving though. Have you tried the 150bhp Leon? Does your car need to be as an octavia?

I have that exact same commute, 2 miles which I do by bicycle most of the time (will be less in the winter). A diesel never even came into it, even with weekend mileage I probably won't see 5k a year.
Don't get a diesel. The advantage of doing bugger all miles is that you can get a nice petrol car, as mpg means little. Hence why I ended up with a 3.0 flat 6 AWD car which does 20-30mpg

I just want something fun to drive and I'm open to ideas. I was looking at a Peugeot 208 GTI last night, I like the leon as well. I looked at a mini cooper s but its so cramped inside.I don't think I'd be so keen on something "quick" for such a short journey if you do so little other driving though. Haha okay I will give up on the diesel and start looking at more petrol optionsDon't get a diesel. The advantage of doing bugger all miles is that you can get a nice petrol car, as mpg means little. Hence why I ended up with a 3.0 flat 6 AWD car which does 20-30mpg

A medium-brisk walking pace is, what, 4mph?
If you have 40 minutes to get into the office from a call, that gives you 10 minutes to get your stuff together and 30 minutes to walk in.
As someone better than I once said, there's no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothing/gear
Yeah and I can be called at any time so if im called at 3am I need to wake up have a shower, have a coffee and some breakfast, get dressed then ill have 10 mins to sprint in like usain bolt.. and its probably going to be raining. If you have 40 minutes to get into the office from a call, that gives you 10 minutes to get your stuff together and 30 minutes to walk in.

Even in the winter 2 miles on a bike will take 10 mins. How cold and wet can you get in 10 mins?
Do you live in the UK?I did walk the 2 miles initially but for me as a 6ft 3in fast walker, it still took 35 minutes. The last thing I'd want to be doing having been woken up at 3am on call is to have to walk/cycle to the office.
