You can just about spec a new XC60 Petrol in the 40K price bracket; A pre reg or ex demo might make a higher specced trim attainable in budget.

We struggled to get an xc60 within budget, hadn't thought about the alfa though

The alfa is a decent option, but Playing with the configurator, I can't really get it optioned up to a nice standard within the 40k - Depends on how much OP likes it tongue out

Personally, The list above, I'd wipe the Vauxhall - 1.2 130PS Petrol looks to be the only petrol option, and would probably be miserable lugging around the full car, especially with an auto box.

The mitsubishi has some decent tech doodads, having sat in one in a local dealer would say it's fairly middling - Didn't seem that premium; You could probably do better with some of the other options for interior quality.

Stelvio would be a good option for performance and looks, but as above, I don't think you'd get many technical doodads within your budget.

The CRV Is a reasonable choice, with a lot of tech on the upper trim level, and a reasonable quality interior. The 1.5 Petrol should have enough go to be useable.

Not too experienced with the other ones that you've listed though.

Not sure any of those really qualify to be called “4x4’s”.

Kia Sportage?

I have had a couple (2wd and 4wd versions) as hire cars and drive well and appear to be specc'd up well (they were not the highest trim available).

I would also ditch the Vauxhall as others have said.

If they have 4WD they, by definition, do.

Are you going off road O|P. Would a land rover or range rover be a better bet?

I have a 2018 Forester XT which replaced a 2003 model. Well worth a look. The XT is being discontinued so you'd need to be quick if you want one. There is a run-out offer on I think. If you don't want the power (which is lovely) then the other models come with the excellent Eyesight system. Don't let the CVT put you off, it's really very good.
I've driven an XV which was much more like a jacked up estate car, much like the older Foresters. Very nice too. The latest Forester is much more SUV-like. The XV was remarkably economical too but I'd miss the turbo too much.

I was looking at these last night, but they don't have a Petrol Automatic offering; Would be a good choice for OP if willing to compromise, as they're quite nice looking, in and out.

Does it have to be brand new as there are some great deals on ex demo/pre registered stock at the moment.

If you don't mind a diesel then I'd take the Edge over the Kuga:

If you don't mind something a little older & spending a bit on fuel then these are a good leftfield option:

If you don't mind a diesel the Grand Cherokee is well worth a test drive.

We need petrol due to lack of miles done.
The kuga was too small inside for me ,big shoulders, and the seat was like a perch.

What I liked most about the XT vs the competition (apart from the performance) is the light, airy cabin and great visibility.
