Yes they were all diesels.
I wasn't fussed either way particularly, would probably have preferred a petrol, but there just aren't many around - none in my budget locally at all. I had to drive 100 miles to see the ones I did! Devon has many advantages, but choice of cars to buy is not one of them.
Cheers for the info

Would anyone know what year DPFs were introduced on the Mercedes?

Thanks for the suggestions.

Yes budget could go to 6k for the right car

The biggest problem is getting my brain round the fact that I should maybe go for a petrol again... In my mind if I go for another big car (which I need) with a petrol engine, then I'm not much better off than my 2.5L Xtrail getting 20MPG & paying £309+ 'tax'.

Looking at the above suggestions if the official urban MPG is less than 30 (real world less obviously), then it's putting me off.
Here's the thing any saving you make on fuel can be wiped out by a clogged up injector let alone a DPF issue also if you get a manual then the clutches won't be cheap either.

But if you really want a diesel then this car is my recommendation a C270 this engine is a pre DPF & is pretty much bulletproof the extra torque & bhp makes it a smoother car, I used to see 34's around town & average 27mpg when I used to commute into the city of London, my car was mapped though this is something I recommend on these.

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

E320cdi straight six which is a six cylinder version of the above.

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

E270

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

Mercedes introduced the DPF in 2006 which is why the 270 & 3.2 320 disappeared from the range both engine are super reliable on the other side of the equation you'll save money on the purchase price.

I don't know the specifics but I had a 05 plate Jag S-type (straight pipes) and it had DPF and the issues that go with them. So I suppose be careful from 2005 onwards if this is something you feel strongly about when making your decision.

What are the Honda accord petrol engines like?
Eg

The Honda engines are reliable & that one is a good example, but the Mondeo that's now 2k cheaper is just as good a car & gives the same fuel economy with better performance.

If you don't like the badge that's fine but they're the best FWD car in this segment:

Mondeo Titanium X Sport

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

Mazda6 Sport these are another good car

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

Skoda VRS

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

V70 2.5T

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

Subaru Legacy ES these are a bit juicy but like the Honda a good car

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

Honda Accord ES GT

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

Insignia Elite 4x4

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

All are reliable & from the above it would be Ford Mazda & the Toyota/Honda tied, these are my top three but that Honda is too much & I personally wouldn't buy it when I could land a better car for 2k less or buy a the Mazda6 with 30k less on the clock & a year newer. TBH it would be those two or nothing for me.

Thanks again!

I'd be viewing that Mondeo if it wasn't over 200 miles away!
I'll look at the other suggestions now

That first Mazda isn't far from me so might go and see it.
The only thing in not sure of- was looking to get a valuation from Autotrader on it, but the reg is not recognised. Is this anything to worry about?!

Cheers

The Autotrader valuations are not anywhere close to reality go for a HPI & M.O.T check instead these are more important, the value is what it is there's not another with the mileage & spec so the price is the price.

Do your checks & I'm sure you'll be able to find room to haggle the price down.

Also Autotrader valuations are low & don't normally reflect the market.

gov.uk MOT checker recognises it, so I'd say it Autotraders site which is the problem.

What does the 'sport' bring over the other trim levels on the Mazda 6?

Thanks in advance

Basically more, google it & you'll get the trim differences.

One for the seriously overpriced car section.

We have a 2006 Passat estate, manual, it has the 2.0 petrol turbo engine as fitted to the mk5 Golf GTi. Owned it for four years and it has not missed a beat. I have spent on it to keep it healthy but just normal things as on any other car.

Very nice....

A little too expensive, old, and uneconomical for me I'm afraid.

So feel free to go for it!

I cant recommend the Mazda 6 highly enough.

We bought a 90k mile 2008 sport in black and it is really is a great car. It's properly fun to drive, frugal, tows a caravan with aplomb and so far has put up with my wife's abuse!

Thanks for that, appreciated.

I had a 53 plate 2 litre before my current car, and it was great

now this is probably a matter of opinion, but would it be worth paying a premium (maybe +£800 before negotiation) for an 'approved used' version, 12 month warranty, some comeback etc

If you want to spend some extra money then why not get your own warranty, it's a 2.5 N/A engine that really doesn't go wrong as long as the car has FSH you'll be fine but if you want a decent warranty buy your own, also finding one with similar spec/mileage won't be easy.
