I would rather see less of the traffic, so happy to be lower down!

Auto is a must for you I think op
I'm thinking more about being able to see that lane closure sign up ahead or the broken down car / accident.

Definitely auto for traffic, I'll probably never go back to manual unless something sporty.
You only lose your view when you drive to closely to the car in front.

Fantastic response Folks, thank you very much everyone. Some excellent ideas there, and it got really funny, made me laugh!
Cheers guys.
That RX 300 looks amazing, real world 40mpg!
Also will look at the c5 diesel.

Right, I'm off to order a pogo stick! Ha ha ha!
You won't be seeing anywhere near 40mpg out of the RX300 on the kind of commute your describing, the C5 is a good shout though.

Actual 40mpg certainly not but cost equivalent 40mpg should be realistic - (its LPG, gas itself is about half price, yes it use's more gas then it would petrol (about 10/15%))

Looked at a 320d today, sounded perfect, £6,000, 2010, 184 Bhp, 69,000 miles, 6 bmw service stamps! EVERY PANAL WAS DAMAGED. Not vandalism just driven by Mr/Mrs McGoo. Even the bonnet had a 2ft square section of what looked like wire wool cleaning!! Couldn't believe it with that history.
Possibly a much longer journey tomorrow looking at a 2006 120d sport auto, 7.8 sec, 50 mpg, full history, 50,000 miles at £5,000. We shall see...

I was in a similar position to yourself a while back and opted to get a diesel as they make a lot of sense on paper, had been accustomed to petrol engine up until then. Whilst the diesel was economical I just couldn't live with the nasty noise and vibrations and got rid after 6 months. Obviously many think they're good, but be wary

You must have a a really old one & I'm surprised you never noticed those issues on your test drive, anyway OP go for a 5/6 cylinder engine & any of those will be smooth & vibration free.

a bit twitchy about 8 year old hybrids.
If serviced at Toyota they will extend Hybrid warranty up to 11 years

If not serviced at Toyota it costs £39 for the Hybrid health check

The Civic hybrid looks great, but I've read that their batteries fail after 6 years.

Cheers.
I talked my mum into spending a bit more than they usually would on a car 10 years ago, persuading her that a Civic hybrid would be ideal for her needs. 10 years on she still has it and it's never had a single thing wrong with it. My mum, who keeps an eye on every single penny still goes on about how cheap it's been to own and run.

was a 2012 car - big noise & vibrations compared to a petrol engine, absolutely - same for all diesels

Are 5 cylinder engines better balanced than 4 cylinder ones?

Yes both 5/6 engines are smoother than a four be it petrol or diesel.
