2004 VW Toureg - What to look for?!
Discussion
I think it's called the 'intermediate sharft bearing' on the prop shaft. It's not a case of if but when that will fail. Same issue with the Porsche Cayenne I had but I was able to get it fixed using VW parts for about £300.
No warning at all. Came out of a motorway services and accellerated and just 'bang bang bang' under the car. I had read about it so knew what it was but it was no less alarming!
Edited to add, no air suspension on a 14 year old car I would count as a positive.

Propshaft . Get bearing changed when purchased otherwise every 70K
Gearbox valve chest. check smooth shifts between 4-5 and visa versa.
V8 solid engine. Touareg probably the best 4x4 of recent times but its a 2.5 ton car so you will get niggles
