Funny how we managed all that in Austin Allegros and Maxis etc when we were kids. Family doesn’t mean you need a bus or to plan for the very rare trip where you might take little johnnies mate. That’s like buying a 5 bedroom house when you only need two because you need a spare room and then all the parents might stay for Christmas one year in ten. It just means you have to plan what really needs to be taken on a trip. I see friends of mine taking enough kit for a military operation and every eventuality when they go out with the two kids etc. Not really necessary
It’s all to do with child car seats.

We have a mix of isofix and non isofix. Yesterday proved the massive inferiority of non isofix v isofix. Both in the back seat of the F10 the isofix didn’t move one bit forward backwards or side to side. The non isofix one slid sideways notably and as it’s not secured to the seat all bar seat belt it does move forwards when braking.

Regardless of that you used to be able to squeeze 4 or at a push 5 in the back row of kids pre seat belts and car seats now however different kettle of fish 3 car seats will just squeeze in the back row of cars but if you need 3x isofix the Safe est by a massive margin for your little ones then you cannot buy a car which has them.

As for trips ours go out to national trusts zoos ski centres parties etc each and every weekend so we and their best mates all have SMax’s do we want to drive buses _ no but it’s useful. Ideal having a vast boot too when it’s pissing it down and you need to change a nappy - try that in a F10 you’ll get soaked and impossible to do it inside the car with 5 up.

You are making a huge assumption though. The OP hasn’t said what family friendly means. You have just assumed that means the same as you. We have no idea if they have 1 or 5 kids or whether they are 1 and 3 or 15 and 16. The needs would be very different.

The thing is things have massively changed since years ago. I remember my parents having a mini and i don't remember there being any issues carting me around.

Of course now kids have got a fking container load of stuff which needs to be moved around with them. Well i think its the mums, insisting on having everything for every eventuality. It is ridiculous, really it is!

Just the other day i was taking the piss out of the mrs because she said:

'now we've got a dog as well (as 1 child) it would just be so much easier having something like a cayenne, we can have a dog crate in the boot and still fit everything'

My first comment was 'its a french bulldog, not a fking lion in the boot" Even she was laughing because she knew how ridiculous it sounds to need a massive car because you've got 1 toddler and a lap dog.

Woman just over complicate everything hehe

Sorry for the slow return. To clarify we have one 7 month old and another likely in the next year. Mid-size is good, to clarify mid-size is not a 7 seater but appreciate for some that would be important.

Isofix a must, and a premium badge also a must. The Macan is where I’m thinking at the moment but the NX is a great call.

Manufacturers warranty on both would be important, it’s peace of mind for us. Whether it’s a residual of the new vehicle or via approved used is of little concern.

So far the sweet spot for depreciation on the Macan and NX seems to be around 4 years maybe 5, then keep for 18 months and sell on.

I’m very curious to see how Brexit and the demonisation of diesel will impact on prices over the coming six months, watch and wait time I think. In the meantime the leased V90 is proving very impressive.

Aren't Macan diesels meant to be a nightmare?

You want an XC60/90

I’m assuming he’s talking DPF issues for those cars that only do the school run.

Well that’s just about being sensible and buying a car that works with your lifestyle. That issue has been known for over a decade now so there is no excuse for ending up in that situation and then appearing surprised
