You do get screwed over with running costs on the full fat M cars for sure. I remember my E90 330i being half the cost to service/insure/tax than my E92 M3 was.

I think that the M140i is a cracking all round car for sure.

OP here. I have secured a service pack for £299 over the first three years of the car. I'll be doing 8,000 miles per year.

The view is that your first service with a BMW main dealer is going to cost you £300 ish anyway, and if your mileage changes and / or you do a lot of town driving too you might get the second service in. You'd be no worse off with having it, but theres an opportunity to be better off. We do 12,000 miles ish a year, so its more likely we'll get the second service in, but by no means a foregone conclusion.

I’d second the above.

When we bought my other half’s MINI, we were told don’t bother with the service pack for the mileage she does. The pack was actually a tenner cheaper than the quote for the first service! It’s due a service in June, so we’ll just sneak two in.

I’d buy it. I think it gets more expensive after a certain period after registration (that’s what I was told). I’m getting it on mine because I reckon I’ll just sneak the second service.

Seriously considering one of these my Cupra goes back in 7 months but would be willing to give it back earlier.

In terms of options what are must have? Looks like the Pro Nav is the way to go, any others?

The first service should be around £250 and the second will be slightly more than double that. The brake fluid change at 3 years isn't included in the plan. It should be £75. Oil top ups are free, but they don't normally use much at all.

If you're anticipating 30mpg+ you won't get anywhere near the second service at 12k per year. Longer runs and 30mpg+ average will see the car make 23-25k before needing a service.

Service plans used to be 5 years. BMW have dropped to 3 years and have worked out that hardly anyone will get a second service in.

My local dealer has quoted 306 for the first service, so theres a fractional saving for me to use a service plan.

If we then happen to hit the second service then great, if we dont we're still slightly better off.

If someone has an assurance from their dealer that they will get the first service for 250 at some point in the future and are confident their mileage pattern wont change in the next three years then yes, theres a small saving to be had by not going for it.

Pro Nav was the only thing that I couldn’t do without. Some people say that adaptive dampers are an absolute must have, but I was more than happy with the passive set up after a 24hour test drive.

I also added heated seats but could have lived without them. My other must haves are part of the Shadow Edition spec anyway (cruise, privacy glass and HK stereo).

We didnt opt for it, even though we did on our previous car, an A45 as after test driving one we didnt think it was necessary. The M140i's ride is firm, but not jarring.

Though personally, i wouldnt die in a ditch over adaptive LEDs either mind you.

But then thats the beauty of individual choice isnt it - what some people consider "essential" others think is a bit meh and vice versa.

As has been said - the car is well spec'd in standard spec so anything else is just preference - we went with Pro Nav, front parking sensors and heated seats and a couple of other minor things but none of those i'd describe as "essential" even though they were on our particular list.

Madness front parking sensors aren't standard

Mines got pro nav, front parking sensors, adaptive LEds, heated seats and adaptive suspension.
Knowing what the adaptive leds are like now I wouldn’t have paid extra for them as they aren’t a patch on the ones on my last 3 series. The adaptive suspension is superb and a must have as far as I am concerned.
