Ok, I’ll bite. A couple of years ago I leased a Skoda yeti. And I liked it so much I bought it when the lease ended. Why?

Well, for something with a footprint the size of a Golf, it’s incredibly versatile. We do not need, or want, a large car, but with the varioflex seats, you can have tons of room in the back and an ample boot, or ample room in the back with a bigger boot. Perhaps once a year it would be ideal to have both, but that’s a fair compromise.

It’s very glassy / airy so the kids have a good view out (unlike in my 130i) so don’t suffer from car sickness. I like the fact it’s quite uncool and not very mumsy. And it’s suprisingly enjoyable to drive. It certainly does a better job of being the car we need than the golf it replaced.

In saying that, I’ve had quite a few other SUVs / crossovers on hire for work and I’ve not enjoyed any of them nearly as much as the yeti.
my dad has one says its the best car he has ever had

Ahhh the Skoda Yeti! Despite my general dislike of SUV's particularly the blingy fashion led things, the Skoda Yeti is the one vehicle that seems to break the mould. It is a proper 4x4, it is rugged and functional, it is cheap enough that you really wouldn't mind sticking a muddy dog in the back, it has enough room for most without carrying unnecessary weight, it has excellent reviews and it is seemingly not purchased by the sort of people who desperately need to say 'look at me'! A good choice sir and unlike the majority of SUV's, a vehicle I can see a point in.

Nothing duller round here than the constant stream of jelly mould blinged up SUV's and their often orange owners. Last time I saw a flashy SUV with any sort of mud on it was several years ago.

The old shape xc90 had the right balance of decent looks and non-flashiness. Shame they made the new one even bigger and much more flashier.

If memory serves, Evo magazine loved the Yeti. Apparently it drives very nicely. I like the look of it too. Personally, I would rather go with an XV or a Forester. Especially the Forester XT.

What about the 2 wheel drive versions?

There is no better DO IT ALL car than a 4x4 Yeti. Modern Foresters are an utter garbage, steering wheel connected to the wheels by a chewing gum, handling like a boat etc.
I actually replaced my 2004 Forester with a 2013 170hp 4x4 Skoda Yeti. I needed better fuel economy and the Yeti does 40mpg at 75-80mph easily fully loaded.
The panoramic roof is fantastic. My one is Laurin and Klement and has all the toys plus all possible underbody protection so I often take it offroading without fear.
Absolutely brilliant cars! You can keep all your estates and hot hatches.

Isn't that odd? The Yeti has to be a crossover by any decent measure and yet it's not getting hate on PH.

I wonder what people's wives think? hehe

Boxy gives you space inside for smaller footprint. Function over fashion.

So should every car sold be boxy? If you dont have a boxy practical car then you are a slave to fashion?

A Yeti is the roomiest car on that platform? Not a Roomster? Or a Golf estate/Touran/Caddy/any one of dozens of VAG offerings?

Indeed, remarkable that in a standard YETI you can get an amazing 1,760 litres of boot space in a car that is only 4.2 metres in length. The current school mums favorite round here the RR Sport achieves less, a maximum of just 1,686 litres of boot space but in a vehicle that's an inconvenient 4.9m in length. And people claim they buy Range Rovers for practicality and not fashion!

Data taken from Autocar.

As much as I like the Yeti I think an Octavia Scout is probably all the car a family needs, great legroom , big boot, proper 4wd.
