I've been running two sheds for a few yrs, fully with the programme, I love it :-)
The golf was free, it's lasted 8 months but is goosed and not worth repair cost hence looking for a new "reliable " shed, but purely in terms of a cheap fixer upper I can work on myself generally. I won't tackle clutches or dmf issues on my drive tho, but happy tinkering with most other stuff.

Is the DMF only a problem on the diesel?

The 2.0 Zetec is chain driven as well so no belts to worry about.

Buy an ATV jack for £70 and a DMF isn't a problem. They aren't massively expensive, complicated or risky to change, I think it's the daunting prospect of dropping a gearbox on your face that puts most people off. ATV jack removes that fear.

My issue is my other shed corrolla for 400 quid has done 3yrs and 45k miles with zero issues and no clutch or dmf worry that's all. Brake discs and pads plus servicing all on my drive proper shed motoring :-)
I've seen another corrolla in worse condition than mine for 900 quid so I probably got a bargain back then :-)
There are some very decent cars around these days when you look with a 1k budget to be fair

No mention of a Mk3 Mondeo yet? They're always bullet proof. Even mine that looks like the previous owner took it through an active war zone is puttering along without issue doing 35+ to the gallon. The 1.8 Petrol is "enough" to get around and has a colossal boot space. AC and cruise as standard too, which is nice.

Prices range from 0.125 sheds up.
I've got one has my tip car, its comfy and has a massive boot being an estate, i only chose it because i couldn't find a tidy avensis or accord estate for £700
This or Focus (although they might be a little crusty so be careful)

My £650 MK3 Mondeo is still going fine, despite me fitting the wrong thermostat last week.... (Don't ask...)

Petrol 1.8, 112000 (ish) miles, 12K of those done by me in the last 18 months

Essential repairs:
Replaced EGR valve - £29 quid of ebay (new!)
Thermostat - £15 off eBay (although I need to re-do this as I bought and fitted the wrong one...)
Wheel bearing - £30

All done DIY by myself

Does 35mpg on short trips and 40+ on motorway

Passed its last MOT no probs... Its comfy, easy to drive, gets treated like a cheap wh*re and seems to relish it! laugh

Sounds like a good find! I can never seem to find low mileage, low price Japanese cars near me!

Auto trader search with notifications, £1k limit, 70k mile max, 20m radius, cash ready and straight onto view anything that comes up is my motto lol

That's pretty much how I found a 1996 Mazda 323F 1.5 back in 2014 for £695 with less than 70K recorded miles and FSH!

But after less than 6 months I was bored to tears and replaced it. laugh

Got to love shedding :-)
Just sold the golf for 150 quid scrap value to get rid of it. Had approx 6-8months motoring for 200 quid in total spent keeping it moving.

Be careful and do the sums. Purchase price is only part of the cost of ownership. You might find buying a newer car is cheaper overall.

It's going to need discs and pads soon. 50 odd quid at ECP. I'll stick a service on it myself.
If it runs for 3yrs like the other shed it works out very cheap motoring tbh. If it breaks big time, I scrap it for 100 quid back and I'm 500 quid down that's all.
