We currently have a 2017 Mazda CX-5 which is a great car. Unfortunately, as our children grow older, the legroom behind my favoured seat position is a little restrictive.

My only other criticisms of the car are:

- Interior dash trim a little poor (a couple of annoying rattles, especially in cold weather)

- The 165 bhp NA petrol engine is a little underpowered, especially when fully loaded. We don't do mega miles so economy is not a deal breaker (assuming it still has a decent range. 28 mpg+ would be great)

So, we're looking at a bigger petrol SUV replacement. Budget is flexible (but not unlimited) - something like a new Toureg 3.0V6 TFSI at £45k OTR would be absolute max.

What could we shortlist? We only need 5 seats, but I appreciate a lot of the options will have superfluous third row seating that will always be folded down.

First ones that come to mind are:

Volvo XC90 T5 or T6?
Jaguar F-Pace
BMW X3, new one is deceptively big

I had a 3-y-o CX9 for a year and was impressed. If Mazda did a decently swift version, it would be on my shortlist. I’d take a look at one as balance to the usual suspects, just make sure you try one with AWD - mine was FWD and often overcome by 280bhp pulling 1900kg.

Handling belied it’s size - felt like big, albeit slightly wobbly, hatchback rather than a near 2-tonne 7-seater.

It's a real shame Mazda don't sell the current CX-9 in the UK.

Our shortlist (all new) so far:

- VW Toureg 3.0 TFSI SEL

- Skoda Kodiaq 2.0 TSI Edition

- Jag F-Pace 2.0 P200 Prestige

- Land Rover Disco Sport P200 S

Obvs the Kodiaq is by far the cheapest. Toureg looks awesome but is also by far the most expensive (but V6...). Disco looking like the best compromise?

How about the Seat Tarraco? I think they are a good looking car and you can get a top of the range, fully loaded one brand new for well under your budget.

How many and how old are the children?
Any requirement for child seats?

I wasn’t aware the Tarraco existed until yesterday! I’ll add it to the list, cheers.

That's where my mind went. Depends if OP needs all the storage in the rear of an SUV though?

If it's just rear legroom that's the concern...
