This is a just a random list of cars .

Go onto your local facebook marketplace / gumtree and then compile a list of what's available 30 miles from where you live ( if your happy travelling 30 miles to view a car )

Then decide how high a mileage car your willing to accept then whittle the list down even more.

I'd be very careful with a clio 1*2 or a mini cooper for a grand , they will have hidden issues , 1500-2k is a safer price for them.

How come your not just sorting your focus ?

You've said it's vgc and you know exactly what's been done to it rather than taking a lucky dip and starting all over again .

Thanks for that

re the focus... it needs at least £500 to get it through the MOT and also the engine is now having problems so id be wasting my money...as I said only cost me £300 so its done me proud

Have you got the Postcode of your local Tesco, Post Office or similar?
Someone may be able to find something suitable local to you.

I got a Civic Type S 2.0 on eBay for £400. Unseen. Did a basic service and fresh MOT. Advisories are worn ARB joints as expected. No rust or anything. Will do nicely. Put 4000 miles already and very reliable with long motorway trips as well. I don’t know the emissions issues but I suspect probably happens if car does short drives.

I think you are over complicating things at this price range. Do you want reliability, style, performance. On an old car pick one. Mine is 16 years old and it’s reliable.

I still say civic type s with 2.0 K20 engine.

Not unless you want big bills.
Emissions on these are at the limit. Had ours 7 years until 2017.
Check out MOT history
YB53LLV
And they don’t like brake callipers either
Never had any of that with mine. 2 MOTs with engine light on emissions perfect, 88k-125k in 18 months exhaust back box, brakes, service x2 was all I did, i wasn’t kind to it either red lined it regularly even managed to have it off the clock as well. (“Private road”)
Guy I sold it to around the corner has also put it through 2 MOTs not a single problem.

Stop looking at traders at this money.

Think about it. If there's a margin in a 1000 quid car, consider what the trader has likely paid for it - buttons.

Anything from a trader at this money will bark, fetch sticks and wear a collar.

Your money will also go a bit further privately.

No..

I am up at 7 and as well as working for myself I look after my mum so dont generally finish until at leas t8pm at night !

For the money I am spending I think I should able to judge it and hopefully rely on friends and maybe others to take a look along with researching the history etc

cheers

Why not post a proper shortlist of cars guy are actually, physically, going to view?

That way you go armed with a bit of feedback.

Narrow down to 5 cars then look up common faults to arm yourself before checking cars out.
My last banger Saab 9-3 I paid £500 for 120k now it’s on 160k 2 years later apart from clutch it’s been cheap wear and tear items. I saw it on gumtree called straight away. Guy said I have 4 people coming tomorrow from mid day. I went 8am I knew it would be snapped up.

Thanks... I do my best with research... honest john, what car, forums etc

The difficulty is in getting the shortlist lol

There is a big difference sometimes between what I like the look of within my budget compared to what people including on here say I should avoid... thats the difficult bit..

Your old car for example..get knocked a lot by owners and critics alike but I like the look of them !

cheers

For the money your spending it's a gamble .

I'd very seriously consider is it worth spending that grand on your focus rather than gambling on a unknown car you don't even seem to want to actually view before buying.

Buying sheds is a gamble you have to accept that and sometimes you buy something good but I bet everyone of us on here have also bought some right stboxes .

True but gambling 650 say on my car to get it through its mot, hoping nothing else goes wrong and if it does the car is worth 100 maybe in parts

Gambling say a £1000 on a car with an mot and if it goes wrong worth say £600 then not much difference except I'll have a newer car with hopefully not the rust I have on mine

Cheers
